High-Tech RFID Identification System, Made Easier by Film Specialist 3M
RFID stands for "Radio Frequency Identification" – a technology that enables non-contact data transfer via signals. Unlike conventional bar code systems, products can be identified without the need of direct contact or line of sight between the label and the reading device. Based on its expertise in adhesives and films, the multi-technology company 3M provides high-quality label materials for smart labels. Intense cooperation with qualified hardware and software suppliers makes 3M a key partner for putting RFID projects into practise.
The high-tech identification system consists of a smart label, a read/write station and the appropriate software. The secret of the smart label is its transponder – a programmable microchip which, together with an antennae, is laminated with film. The chip in the transponder can be read and also rewritten with the help of signals transmitted from the stations. This new technology, that is already used in logistics, the automotive and oil industries and also in libraries, will make a major contribution to facilitating cross-industry working processes in the future.
Smart Labels In Proven 3M Label Stock Quality
With its wide range of adhesives and high-quality label stock, 3M is able to provide suitable components for the smart labels meeting highest quality requirements. They provide superior protection of the transponder, excellent adhesion also on difficult-to-bond surfaces, temperature and chemical resistance as well as a special surface coat guaranteeing perfect print in thermal transfer or laser printing processes.
Cost Reduction Through Effective Goods Management
Enabling automatic capturing of products, RFID technology facilitates management of goods in a variety of logistic systems. Sorting and alignment are no longer necessary, and manual scanning is also eliminated. This results in substantial potential for increased efficiency and cost reduction. Uniform goods can now also be identified on euro pallets. In the production line, products can be equipped with smart labels to identify them will all relevant data – all without need for contact. This enables complete tracking of products returning to the plant for repair or maintenance purposes.
Applications intended for the future include the use of "intelligent" trolleys. They capture goods via contactless data transmission and book the amount due from the account when passing through the cash counter.
