New two-component adhesive revolutionises structural bonding of plastics

The difficulties associated with materials exhibiting low surface energy such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are now to become a thing of the past with the launch of a new two-part adhesive from 3M that delivers a high strength structural bond on such plastics. This development has been customer-driven and comes as a direct result of designing to satisfy customer-identified criteria that allow greater production efficiency together with time and cost reductions.

3M Scotch-Weld™ DP-8010 Structural Plastic Adhesive has been developed not just to replace mechanical fixing or fusion joining techniques, but to offer the possibility of bonding to low surface energy plastics without the need for specialised surface pre-treatments.

Whilst Scotch-Weld™ DP-8010 Structural Plastic Adhesive can be used to bond a wide range of materials such as wood, primed or painted metals, plastics and glass, its real strength lies in securing adhesion between hard-to-bond substrates such as polyolefins with the minimum amount of surface preparation. Typically only a light wipe of the surfaces to remove dust, water or oil is required.

Complementing its bonding strength, Scotch-Weld™ DP-8010 also delivers improved productivity. This solvent-free, acrylic-based visco-elastic adhesive cures at room temperature, saving time as well as the space requirement and overhead costs of heaters, curing ovens or UV lamps.

Offering ten minutes open time, Scotch-Weld™ DP-8010 gives a comfortable margin for the accurate positioning and, if necessary, the re-positioning of large or multiple components. Moreover, with time to handling strength reached in a 1.5-2 hour period, it facilitates production cycle times. Final strength is reached after 8-24 hours at room temperature but this can be reduced to 30 minutes with assisted heating between 70-75°C. In either case, bond strength equates with that of the substrates and the bond itself is resistant to humidity, water and many commonly used solvents.

The high strength, load-bearing capability of Scotch-Weld™ DP-8010 gives it an immediate fit in a broad range of applications across the complete spectrum of industries but with special emphasis on the most demanding sectors. These include transportation, aerospace, automotive and construction markets.

The product has been designed for convenience use. 3M Scotch-Weld™ DP-8010 is available in Duo-Pak 38 ml and 265 ml cartridges for use in the 3M EPX™ applicator system that simultaneously and accurately mixes and dispenses the two-component adhesive.
