TEN STUDENTS WIN AVERY DENNISON InvEnt ''SPIRIT OF INVENTION'' SCHOLARSHIPS
Innovations in fields ranging from energy to information are rewarded
Shanghai, China (June 14, 2013) - The Avery Dennison Foundation (ADF) has announced the 2013 winners of its annual InvEnt "Spirit of Invention" Scholarship Program. Ten college students demonstrating outstanding innovation practices in science fields were presented with scholarships at an award ceremony held today at Avery Dennison's Neal Research Center in Kunshan.
Each of the ten students selected received a scholarship grant of US$800, to be used in their second and third years of study. The program, which attracted over 90 applications, rewarded students from the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication; East China University of Science and Technology; South China University of Technology and Wuhan University. Following the ceremony, the winners visited Avery Dennison's Neal Research Center in Kunshan. They will also participate in a half-day Innovation Workshop designed to develop teamwork, innovation and business leadership skills.
The students were required to submit a proposal for an innovation in their applications. Among the winners’ brilliant concepts are a transparent solar cell, a multidimensional compass, smart labels for food storage and freshness, and high-efficiency luggage that is able to climb stairs.
"At Avery Dennison, we believe people are the biggest single driver of innovation, and we've achieved promising results through this program," says Alicia Maddox, president of Avery Dennison Foundation and senior director of community investment for Avery Dennison Corporation. "We will continue to support more talented young people and nurture their development into the innovators of tomorrow, helping to drive China's transition to a knowledge economy."
The Avery Dennison Corporation established the Avery Dennison Foundation as its philanthropic arm in 1978. In 2008, ADF launched the InvEnt "Spirit of Invention" Scholarship Program in China to encourage young college students to become more interested in science and technology and engage in innovation activities. Now in its sixth year, the program has provided support to a total of 76 promising undergraduate students in China, with scholarships amounting to US$246,200.
In addition to the scholarships, the program includes various innovation workshops and a dynamic, interactive speaker series for interested members of the academic community at participating universities. Through these initiatives, the Foundation is dedicated to inspiring the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among university students, importing more international best practices in innovation and, ultimately, contributing to the country's success.
"The six-year InvEnt program underlines Avery Dennison's commitment to technological and business excellence," said Jim Heng Lee, vice president and general manager, Materials Group, Greater China, Avery Dennison. "Ever since our company was founded in 1935, this has been one of our driving forces, and we will continue to invest in the future of the communities we serve by promoting industrial innovation and entrepreneurship."
