Press releases:
Flexible switches via PoE
Belden has added three new unmanaged low-cost switches from the SPIDER series to its Hirschmann™ product range. These switches support Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) and have either five twisted-pair ports (SPIDER 5TX PD EEC) or one twisted-pair port and one fiberoptic port for multimode (SPIDER 1TX/1FX-MM PD EEC) or singlemode optical fiber (SPIDER 1TX/1FX-SM PD EEC). Other features include industrial protection class IP30, a strong metal housing and an extended temperature range from -40° to +70°C. Since all versions are powered via PoE there is no need for a separate power supply or even a socket. These switches can therefore be used wherever a PoE port is available, thus allowing flexible network expansion, with additional ports for data transmission via copper cable or – for large distances or where there are strong electromagnetic fields – fiberoptic uplinks.
Compact design and minimum cabling
Belden has added six new Fast Ethernet switches to the OCTOPUS range from its Hirschmann™ product series. Thanks to an integrated power supply unit these switches take up less space than designs with an external power supply and also require less cabling, which reduces possible error sources and thus increases the operational reliability of the connected terminal equipment. Three of the switches are unmanaged 10-port devices. The others have nine ports and feature layer 2 basic software from Hirschmann™, incorporating a variety of management and security functions and fast redundancy methods. Both the 9-port and the 10-port switches are available with or without PoE functionality and either a 24V or 110V power supply unit. The PoE versions are fanless with additional cooling fins, which provide effective temperature management resulting in longer lifecycles. All six switches have robust, compact die-cast zinc housings and are designed to operate at temperatures in the range -40°C to +70°C. They also fulfill the EMC and fireproofing requirements of the European standards that govern use in rail vehicles.
Integrated shielding ensures high functional reliability
The new M12 receptacle connectors from Belden's Lumberg Automation™ product range can be used to connect control units to ProfiNet/Profibus networks via bus modules as well as to transmit analog data at field level. Integrated shielding between devices brings a high level of functional reliability. The receptacle connectors are available with assembled control cables or with printed contacts for PCB mounting. In the printed contact versions, the integrated shielding ensures optimum flexibility for shield continuity. In the case of the assembled connectors, and depending on the port assignment of the control units, a diagnostics interface can be implemented outside the switch cabinet using an Ethernet connection. This practically eliminates the disruptions resulting from repair or maintenance work. These receptacle connectors are simple to install thanks to standardized M12 connection technology and color-coded bus connections. Additional features include industrial protection class IP67, high shock and vibration resistance, and a wide temperature range of -30° to +80° C. They enable highly-available data communication solutions in areas such as mechanical and plant engineering, material handling or public transport.
Maximum security thanks to high fire protection classes
The new railway connectors from Belden's Lumberg Automation™ product program have been specially designed for use in trains. Complying with all international railway standards and stringent fire protection requirements including Hazard Level 2, these connectors provide maximum security and can be used in all parts of the world. Offering vibration-proof M12 connection technology, industry protection class IP67 and a wide temperature range of -40° to +90° C, they are capable of withstanding the harshest environmental conditions. Simple to install, the connectors are offered as molded ProfiNet or field-attachable versions. Individual lengths of cable are optionally available for the field-attachable connectors. This choice of versions means they can be employed in a wide range of solutions. Possible applications include the networking of control modules for doors and air conditioning in trains. The shielded railway connectors can also be used in combination with IP cameras or infotainment systems.
Functionally reliable and easy to maintain
The new Hirschmann™ field-attachable GDM series valve connectors can be used to supply power to components such as solenoid valves, pressure sensors and temperature sensors, or to connect them to a data network. Circuit protection ensures that downstream circuitry cannot be damaged by excess voltage or electromagnetic fields. Versions with built-in LED status indicators (with or without circuit protection) are also available, making maintenance considerably easier. Depending on the version of the valve connector, additional features include the industrial protection class IP68, an operating temperature range of -40° to +90° C and high shock and vibration resistance. They play an important role in implementing reliable solutions that enhance the productivity of machines and systems, even under harsh environmental conditions.
Reliable data transmission thanks to special shielding
Belden has added new Gigabit Ethernet connectors to its Lumberg Automation™ product range. These connectors, which support data rates of up to 10Gbps, have a compact design with special shielding that also covers the individual wire pairs, thus guaranteeing reliable data transmission even where there are strong electromagnetic fields. They are offered with M12 or RJ45 connection technology, and in both molded and self-assembly versions, optionally including individual cable lengths, making them flexible and quick to put into operation. Other features include a robust design, a wide operating temperature range of from -30° to +90°C and – for the M12 versions – industrial protection class IP67. The Gigabit Ethernet connectors thus facilitate highly available and cost-effective solutions for a host of applications, such as connecting IP cameras and infotainment systems in rail vehicles – approval under EN 50155 has been applied for – or wiring up complex machines and systems.
Universal real-time I/O functionality for ProfiNet
The new I/O modules from the LioN-M series of Belden’s Lumberg Automation™ portfolio enable sensors and actuators to be linked into real-time ProfiNet I/O networks, with their two-port switches (10/100 Mbps) that support both the real time (RT) and isochronous real time (IRT) standards. BOOTP (bootstrap protocol) and DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) ensure fast and easy startup. Each of the 16 digital channels has a rated output current of up to 1.6A, with a maximum total current capacity of 9A. In the 0980 ESL 711 (16DI) module these channels can be used as inputs, and in the universal version 0980 ESL 700 (16DIO Universal) they can also be used as outputs in any combination. The easy diagnostic concept enables precise fault location for each individual port. Both modules facilitate line topologies and you can also continue to use existing communications structures such as cable ducts and energy chains without making any changes to their physical layout. This means that there is usually no need to install cost-intensive star cabling and additional switches. The universal module also offers the highest possible degree of flexibility, not only at the planning stage but also when making changes at the commissioning stage or during subsequent upgrades.

These are especially designed for use in the field-level networks of power supply companies, but they also can be used in any situation where uninterrupted communication is required, for instance for mechanical engineering projects or drives for production facilities. These extremely robust fanless switches have eleven ports, three of which can be used for SFP transceivers. These support Fast (100 BASE-FX) or – optionally – Gigabit Ethernet (100/1000 BASE-FX). The remaining eight ports can be used either for 100 BASE-TX or as a combination of four SFP transceivers and four TX ports. Additional features of these switches include comprehensive management, diagnostic and filter functions plus a variety of redundancy methods and markedly expanded security mechanisms. In addition to the standard configuration, Hirschmann™ also offers a version that supports highly precise synchronization compliant with IEEE 1588v2, plus PRP (Parallel Redundancy Protocol) and HSR (High-availability Seamless Redundancy). This means that, for the first time, it is now possible to implement networks that guarantee uninterrupted data communications with the attached systems and can thus – in the case of the electricity supply industry – guarantee reliable power supplies to end customers at all times.
Module with the functional scope of a standalone switch
Belden has added the new managed Embedded Ethernet switches EES 20 and EES 25 to its Hirschmann™ product range. These switches provide automation devices that possess Ethernet interfaces the complete functional scope of a standalone switch. The EES 20 and EES 25 each has six Fast Ethernet ports that can be configured for either 10/100 BASE TX or 100 BASE FX. They also offer extensive management and filter functions plus a variety of redundancy methods and port security. In addition, the EES 25 supports precision synchronization as per IEEE 1588v2 plus PRP (parallel redundancy protocol), which guarantees uninterrupted data communications. This function range can be extended by updating the software, which means that these two Embedded Ethernet switches offer maximum flexibility plus a guaranteed future. Manufacturers of automation equipment no longer need to concern themselves with switching technology and can instead focus on their own core strengths, thus minimizing development risks. An evaluation kit is also available to assist manufacturers at the design-in stage.
Tailor-made WLAN access points and clients
Belden’s new OpenBAT range from Hirschmann™ is the first modular system to enable industry-standard WLAN access points and clients to be configured via the internet. This range, comprising the BAT-R (IP20) and BAT-F (IP67) series, supports the IEEE 802.11n transmission standard, which facilitates data speeds of up to 450Mbps in both the 5GHz and the 2.4GHz bands. Both series are based on entirely new hardware and also have a powerful HiLCOS operating system with extensive management, security and quality of service functions plus layer 3 IP routing. The number of wireless modules and Ethernet LAN ports can be configured individually, as can the power delivery concept. This also applies to the over a dozen certificates that qualify these access points and clients for use in, for example, the power supply industry, the gas and oil sector or rail transportation. They can be used to set up fast and stable infrastructure and meshed networks plus wireless distribution systems (WDS) or point-to-point connections. Several thousand different designs can be configured using these OpenBAT devices. The range, expected to be launched in Spring 2012, thus allows tailored solutions with an optimal price-performance ratio.
Gigabit Ethernet via M12 Ports
The new Gigabit OCTOPUS from Belden’s Hirschmann™ product range is a managed IP54 switch that was especially developed for road and rail vehicle applications that require fast data connection. To this end the switch has two Gigabit Ethernet uplinks for twisted-pair cables (1000 BASE-TX) connected via vibration-proof M12 ports. Eight Fast Ethernet ports (10/100 BASE-TX) are provided for connecting terminal equipment. These are also designed for M12 connectors and support PoE. They make it possible to power equipment such as IP cameras, Voice-over-IP phones or WLAN Access Points without the need for additional cables.
