New HDPE for caps and closures made using the unique bimodal Borstar® process offers greater quality and improved economics for converters

Two new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) grades, based on Borealis’ proprietary Borstar process, have been developed especially by Borealis for beverage caps and closures offering converters greater security, better quality and more favourable economics.

The Borstar-based closures exhibit outstanding environmental stress crack resistance, well-balanced mechanical properties, and can be produced by injection or compression moulding. The new bi-modal HDPE grades are particularly suited to beverage closures for carbonated soft drinks and sparkling water.

Qualtech (France), a highly-regarded, independent testing lab, supports Borealis’ own panel test which rates Borstar materials as very good in organoleptic properties, including freedom from objectionable taste or odour.

Beverage closure solutions have evolved to meet productivity improvements required to respond to growing worldwide consumption of bottled beverages, combined with increasing concern over bottle and closure security and safety. These new Borstar grades (MB6561 and MB6562) offer processing properties that enable optimised cap design without compromising safety.

“Quality and economics are the main drivers in the packaging industry,” says Dirk Matthijs, Application Marketing Manager Caps and Closures, Borealis Moulding. “Borstar has excellent properties which can lead to down-gauging and improved processability gives energy savings and decreased mould maintenance, all leading to competitive advantages for converters.”

Borealis is a leading supplier of enhanced polyolefin plastics - polyethylene and polypropylene - producing more than 3.5 million tonnes per year. These highly versatile plastics are converted into thousands of everyday products such as packaging, automotive components and building materials.

Borealis has its head office in Denmark and production sites in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. Research and development is consolidated at four Innovation Centres, and customers are served through nine European Customer Service Centres. We employ around 5,000 people.

Borealis is owned 50% by the Norwegian oil company, Statoil, and 50% by IOB Holdings, owned equally by OMV, the Austrian oil and natural gas group, and by the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) of Abu Dhabi.

Borstar is a registered trademark of Borealis A/S, Denmark. The key to Borstar technology is the tailoring of polyethylene and polypropylene at the molecular level. Invented by Borealis, Borstar technology provides innovative polymers with good mechanical properties and good processability. Borstar-based materials offer competitive cost with less burden on the environment. These materials also add value to products based on its technology thanks to superior properties and processing economies for a broad range of products, including pipe, packaging, and more.
