Norner Innovation as – a new but well known partner for the plastic industry

Borealis frees up its Norwegian Innovation centre as a fully Independent research and development company

Norner Innovation is a new and fully independent international research and industrial consulting company. It is founded as a full transformation of the Norwegian Innovation centre of Borealis including employees, competence and laboratory assets. It will continue a 30 years success story as a world leading R&D center providing solutions for the gas and plastic industry.

Norner Innovation is in operation as of September 1st. It has been one of four Borealis innovation centers and acknowledged to be a leader in plastic innovations internationally and has solid competence all the way back from when the Norwegian companies Saga Petrokjemi, Statoil and Norsk Hydro started up the Petrochemical activities in Norway in the 70ties. Borealis, today owned by OMV (Austria) and IPIC (Abu Dhabi) has decided to restructure their innovation activity by phasing out of Norway and building up in Austria and Abu Dhabi as a part of its long term strategy. Norner will deliver technical support and innovation project work to Borealis short term and be a future important external co-operation partner long term. However, Norner will now start to develop an independent portfolio of projects and new business.

As an independent company, Norner can offer leading-edge competence within all relevant parts of the polymer and plastics value chain through scientists, engineers and advanced laboratories. The expertise range from gas conversion, polymerisation, polymer modifications to conversion and end use of plastics. Two of our key competence centers are within plastic additives and packaging materials and design.

Norners comprehensive scientific lab has equipment and staff to cover a wide range of key technologies within the polymer industry and is immediately capable to cooperate with companies in different levels of our value chain. In addition to design of polymers and plastics application development, Norner will explore the field of gas conversion within new innovative concepts such as CO2 conversion to high value products. For this purpose, Norner has unique and modern reactors and experienced staff that can mimic industrial full scale processes.

“We have established a new company and I am pleased to get the opportunity to lead the way ahead to create our new future says Norners General Manager, Tine Rørvik. “ The People are motivated and enthusiastic looking forward to utilise their competence towards the broader market than before”.

Borealis will be the owner of Norner in the startup phase before the company is gradually transferred to new owners. The competence centre has around 80 employees and is expected to have a turnover of 100 million NOK.
