New Bormod achieves step change in food packaging productivity
In response to the needs of the food packaging industry for more efficient and higher quality packaging, Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, has launched Bormod™ BJ368MO. This new injection moulding polypropylene (PP) grade offers sturdy performance, faster productivity and light weight properties. The new solution can be used to produce consumer food containers for products such as refrigerated salads, margarines, and fresh and frozen dairy products.
For processors, Bormod BJ368MO delivers a unique step change in productivity of typically up to 20%. The grade is based on proprietary Borealis Nucleation Technology, which allows PP to solidify very quickly in the mould. The resulting faster cycle times are enhanced further by the anti-static additives that ensure excellent de-moulding even at temperatures as high as 90°C.
In addition, the unique mix of exceptional flow and strength allows processors to use injection moulding to achieve packaging with walls as thin as 0.3 mm without compromising on impact resistance.
Bormod’s downgauging potential delivers material savings and weight reduction benefits of between 10 to 20%, improving cost and handling efficiency for the final product manufacturer. The material’s high impact resistance, which is maintained at temperatures as low as -20°C, ensures excellent drop resistance and good stacking performance during storage.
Furthermore, Bormod BJ368MO helps packaging to retain its original high quality appearance and to preserve the packaged foodstuffs. Colour independent shrinkage and very good dimensional stability simplify production, while anti-static additives eliminate dust collection during processing and when in final use.
Paolo Bergaglio, Technical Manager at Piber Group, a leading Italian manufacturer of a complete range of primary plastic food packaging, comments on the all-round benefits offered by Bormod BJ368MO: “Our food industry customers are increasingly demanding lighter weight packaging solutions but with ever-stricter criteria for drop and stacking performance, high quality and good aesthetics. With Bormod BJ368MO we can ensure our containers not only meet these requirements but also allow us, as producers, to benefit from a faster and smoother production process.”
