Borouge 2 Milestones (Fact Sheet)
December 2003 - Borouge announces its intention to expand existing Borstar capacity from 450 kilotonnes (kts) to 600 kts per annum, as well as a feasibility study to form a 1.4 million tonne world scale petrochemical complex at Ruwais, Abu Dhabi in the UAE.
June 2004 - Achieved 1 million tonnes of production in Ruwais.
March 2005 - Successful expansion of polyethylene (PE) capacity in Ruwais increased from 450 kts to 600 kts to meet market demand.
July 2005
- Borouge 2 capacity expansion plans announced. Scheduled for completion in 2010, the project includes a production capacity expansion to 1.4 million tonnes of ethylene and associated downstream Borstar® technology PE and polypropylene (PP) units.
- Project Management Contract (PMC) agreement was awarded to Foster Wheeler. HSBC was selected as the Financial Advisor for the project.
September 2005 - The Licence Agreement for the Olefins Conversion Unit (OCU) was concluded with ABB Lummus Global Inc. Work will commence over a period of seven months to develop the Process Design Package (PDP) from their offices in Bloomfield, the US.
October 2005 - The Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) for Utilities & Offsite (U&O) Option in the PMC was exercised.
November 2005 - Borouge issued an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) tender for the ethylene cracker. Bids are due by May 2006.
February 2006
- The FEED contract for the OCU was awarded to ABB Lummus Global Inc.
- A contract to start the FEED for the Polyolefin units was awarded to Fluor Mideast Ltd.
- A contract was awarded to MWH to carry out the study of Health, Safety & Environment Impact Assessments (HSEIA) for the facilities and the lenders.
- Maersk Logistics was selected as Borouge’s supply chain study consultant to advise on the Supply Chain concept for Borouge 2 products.
