Clariant launches new sun care and preservation concepts

Muttenz, April 13, 2010 - Clariant’s launch of its Sun Care and Integrated Preservation concepts to in-cosmetics 2010 visitors heralds new opportunities for formulators to easily boost the efficacy of UV absorbers in sunscreens and to reduce the use of preservatives in cosmetic formulations.

Both concepts offer cost- and time-saving benefits to formulators. They achieve this by clearly identifying the combination of ingredients required to generate performance and aesthetic benefits, and to improve the efficiency of formulations.

For formulators within the sun care market, Clariant’s Sun Care Concept offers easy to process raw materials that, when used to build an excellent chassis, increase the effectiveness of UV absorbers. As a result, formulators can reduce the amount of UV absorber in their formulation and UV protection performance is enhanced.

The Sun Care concept covers a broad range of ingredients, including SPF performance boosters, which results in quick absorption and enables a non-fatty velvet or silky skin feel even for high SPF lotions and creams. The sunscreen formulations can be preserved using the lowest dosage of preservatives necessary for optimum consumer safety.

Clariant’s new Integrated Preservation concept covers a package of solutions to preserve and viscosify cosmetic formulations, with added cost-efficiency. Formulators benefit from higher flexibility and more creativity to develop innovative cosmetic formulations by using new preservative blends, preservative efficacy boosters and rheology modifiers.

As part of the new Integrated Preservation concept, Clariant launches Velsan® SC, a natural, synergistic aid that supports the cosmetics industry’s move towards less preservatives in formulations.

Boosting the performance of classical, listed preservatives, Velsan SC helps to decrease the overall amount needed for safe preservation. Velsan SC not only enhances synergistically the performance of Phenoxyethanol or Benzyl Alcohol, for example, but it also helps to increase the viscosity of rinse-off formulations.

Sonja Gehm, Global Marketing Manager, Industrial & Consumer Specialties at Clariant comments: “Our two new concepts and the innovative ingredients they offer simplify the whole formulation choice process, allowing formulators to focus in on the best ingredients for achieving their formulation goals.”
