New Clariant MEVOPUR® brand aids risk-control in medical and pharmaceutical sector

Muttenz, October 27, 2010 - Clariant Masterbatches business unit unveils MEVOPUR®, its new dedicated brand for medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging to K 2010 visitors. Its introduction reinforces Clariant’s position as a trusted and leading provider of color and surface engineered masterbatches and compounds for customers serving the medical and pharmaceutical sector.

MEVOPUR color and performance masterbatches and compounds recognize the sector’s need for controlled, consistent and compliant materials. They offer vibrant colors and new opportunities to enhance the functionality of highly-specialized medical and pharmaceutical applications, taking safety and regulatory compliance into account.

This is particularly relevant in light of tightening regulatory controls governing end-product ingredients, and the increasing responsibility of pharmaceutical companies, packaging converters and device manufacturers to communicate their requirements regarding traceability, consistency and safety to suppliers throughout the value chain.

MEVOPUR supports polymer and resin producers, processors and converters working in the medical and pharmaceutical sector in improving capability, adding innovative performance and design, and boosting the convenience and reliability of applications, from single-use disposables to catheters and drug delivery systems.

Color is becoming an increasingly important differentiator in making off-the-shelf applications stand out or aiding identification for safety purposes. In addition, MEVOPUR offers solutions to the latest surface engineering developments, providing advanced functions such as laser marking, friction-reducing solutions, and radiopacity used for the manufacture of components that can be visualized using X-ray for procedures requiring fluoroscopic evaluation.

MEVOPUR helps to minimize risk at every stage of design, production and approval. Clariant’s global team of specialists from R&D, production, sales and marketing, and customer service, works closely with individual customers from the concept stage through to production to pre-test materials and assess risk in order to develop compliant, targeted color and functionality for each application.

Spanning three continents, the globally-pioneering ISO 13485:2003 accredited facilities in the United States, Asia and Europe offer segregated manufacturing lines to reduce the risk of cross contamination. The MEVOPUR range includes masterbatches and compounds whose ingredients have been biologically evaluated against USP parts 87 and 88 (Class VI devices) and / or the international standard ISO10993. Clariant introduced evaluation against the ISO10993 standard in response to increasing requests from the sector for this compliance. Clariant recently launched a new range of globally harmonized standard colors for PP and PE as well as other materials such as PEBA, where ingredients have been biologically evaluated according to ISO10993 and USP parts 87 and 88 (Class VI).

Additional services to help customers more easily comply with local regulatory requirements include documentation support in line with FDA guidelines, covering relevant product safety and compliance documentation and information on potential leachables and extractables. The company operates an open-to-audit policy and fully traceable production.
