Clariant launches unique organic synthesis solvents with favorable toxicological properties

Muttenz, October 5, 2010 - Clariant unveils advances in no acute toxicity, easy-handling solvents for use in pharmaceutical and other chemical applications with the launch at CPhl of Highsolv® P99 and Highsolv® E99 for organic synthesis (Hall 6 6L62).

The two colorless, low viscous solvents with favorable toxicological properties offer yield-improving and performance-related properties, making them a viable replacement for commonly used toxic and flammable solvents for organic synthesis such as THF, dichloromethane, toluene, and NMP.

Highsolv P99 and Highsolv E99 are highly versatile. They have high flash and boiling points that ensure useful operating temperatures for a wide range of chemical sequences. Readily miscible with diverse solvents, Highsolv P99 is also miscible with water. Both solvents are stable to numerous strong bases and can be used in mildly acidic processing conditions, further extending their versatility.

Tests have demonstrated the improved efficiency of both solvents in several types of reactions when compared to traditional solvents. These include better kinetics for C-alkylation reaction, better yields for Grignard reaction and simplified product isolation for C-alkylation and Grignard reactions.

For all reactions similar and, in some cases, better impurity levels are achieved. Selectivities of reactions are improved or minimally at the same level as with usual solvents.

For industrial processes serving the pharmaceutical and fine chemical sector these benefits create a better cost position with improved yields and reduced environmental impact. The lower required investment is supported by less toxicological solvents for all-round advantages.

“Highsolv P99 and Highsolv E99 are finding wide acceptance as reaction process solvents, emphasizing the need for performance-improving, lower toxic solvents in organic synthesis, be it for pharmaceutical applications or other sectors with stringent requirements such as agriculture or fragrances, ” comments Dirk Hamm, Director Business Line Building Blocks & Intermediates Clariant. “We are pleased to unveil the benefits of our latest developments in this field to the CPhl audience.”
