Innovations that ensure performance and quality for technical textiles
A strong commitment to safety and ecology
Muttenz, 24 May 2011 – Under the theme ‘Performance that protects – Protection that performs’ – and at an impressive stand with a striking cubist design – Clariant is showcasing its latest innovative and sustainable solutions for the technical textiles sector at this year’s Techtextil.
In many instances, technical textiles are about providing protection – whether for people, vehicles, buildings or the environment and Clariant has developed advanced solutions to provide exactly what’s needed when it’s needed, be it strength, resiliency, antimicrobial protection, fire retardancy, repellency or barrier performance.
Highlights at Booth 3.0 B33 for the Protech©, Medtech©, Mobiltech© and Hometech© categories include the many new products presented here below. They complete an already unique portfolio and confirm Clariant as a matchless system supplier of solutions that are especially designed for the final application.
Protech
Visitors at the show will experience why Clariant solutions are ‘the safeguard you can rely on’ for repellency, flame retardancy and antibacterial protection.
Very easy to handle in processing, Nuva® N products impart long-lasting soil repellency and release effects, while being non-sensitive in respect of their compatibility to other finishing chemicals.
Specifically for manufacturers of protective clothing, new PFOA-free, C6 based Nuva N4547 provides a highly durable soil release finish with good oil repellency, most notably on cellulosic fabrics.
Protective material also needs to be flame retardant and Clariant’s Pekoflam® MSP liq is a top performer here. It is less hygroscopic than competing products and, a very good water soaking resistance can be achieved by thermoset treatments at 160-170°C. Pekoflam MSP is a listed Oeko-Tex 100 Class II product.
Medtech
Clariant offers products that are especially designed to help create ‘a barrier you can trust, where cleanliness is a must’, through benefits such as strength and flexibility, alcohol and blood repellency and antibacterial protection.
A number of benefits can be provided to medical and hygienic disposables, meanwhile, with Nuva N2155 liq, a C6 based fluoro polymer with non detectable PFOA*: This is characterised by very good alcohol and blood repellence, with a fast curing profile, even at low temperatures, making it suitable for sensitive fibers such as polypropylene. The fastness of Nuva N2155 liq provides an excellent repellency performance and the non-ionic nature of the product has an improved compatibility with the binders employed in such disposables.
Appretan® NF liq, meanwhile, imparts very interesting properties on nonwovens for medical and hygiene applications, notably alcohol resistance and wet elongation. The styrene/acrylate is soft and self crosslinking, even though being formaldehyde free and hydrophobic. This interesting performance also fits nicely into pigment printing concepts.
Mobiltech
Clariant has developed new products for a ‘protection that keeps your textile clean and fresh’, answering the demanding requirements of Mobiltech applications: strength and flexibility, repellency, flame retardancy and antibacterial protection.
For the back-coating of seat covers and carpets, automotive fabric suppliers choose Pekoflam STC p, which not only has high water resistance, but can also withstand common dry cleaning systems and achieve limited wash fastness (when incorporated in a suitable hydrophobic binder matrix).
The product is halogen free, non fogging and of a non hygroscopic nature. With no yellowing from UV occurring over an extended lifetime, textile mills are now able to fulfil most critical parameters needed in this field.
Newly launched at the Techtextil, Appretan N94181 is a very hard polymer based on vinyl/acrylate chemistry. This new product outperforms classical styrene/acrylate products, making it a perfect candidate whenever better film forming properties are required. It is mainly recommended for stiffening nonwovens used in the transportation sector and has low yellowing and excellent wetting properties.
Hometech
In respect of the need for ‘safety that gives peace of mind’, Clariant will highlight products allowing strength and flexibility, repellency, flame retardancy and antibacterial protection. Two products in the Nuva N series are finding wide applications in technical textiles for the home. In combination, Nuva N5151 liq and Nuva SBC liq provide particularly effective soil repellency, stain blocking characteristics and low dry soiling properties to carpets.
Nuva N products are based on Clariant’s C6 chemistry, introduced in 2007 as a cleaner route to the production of toxicologically-safe high molecular weight polymeric fluoro compounds.
Clariant offers both active and passive stain management systems as part of the Nuva N series. With hydrophobic active protection, the repellency effect of the fluorocarbon is directly visible and effective on water, oil and alcohol, while at the same time providing protection against acids and caustic substances. With passive Nuva N systems, the effect is less immediately apparent, but the finish works on stains to ensure their easy removal during washing.
Sanitized®1
Two new Sanitized®1 antimicrobial additives round off the new Clariant products being showcased at Techtextil 2011.
Sanitized®1 PL 24-32 is a safe treatment for soft PVC products, imparting protection against fungal and yeast infestation. It prevents ‘pink stain’ problems which are known to affect this material, and is also effective against streptoverticillia, which can also cause stains. This product has an excellent light fastness and migration resistance.
Large spectrum antimicrobial protection for the PUR industry is provided with Sanitized®1 TPL 27-40. When incorporated in polyurethane, the additive is resistant to water exposure and effective against a broad range of microbes – bacteria, yeasts, fungi etc.
‘As a global leader in speciality chemicals – many of which are employed in technical textiles production – Clariant is committed to establishing long-lasting relationships based on our proven expertise, ongoing innovation and developing sustainable solutions,’ says Thomas Winkler, Head of Textile Business at Clariant. ‘Customers prefer to work with us because we identify their needs at an early stage and provide customised products all along the technical textiles chain. Boosting the creativity and efficiency of our customers is what we’re all about. We look forward to discussing ways to do this for both established and new customers at Techtextil this year.’
