Clariant Showcased Pharmaceutical Packaging Solutions at Pharmapack North America Debut

  • Featured active and protective packaging for moisture and oxygen control, including full line of desiccant canisters
  • Displayed IDC® Integrated Desiccant Closure, an all-in-one solution
  • Presented a technical session on moisture, oxygen and shelf life
Charlotte, (USA), June 7, 2012 –Performance Packaging, a member of Clariant’s BU Functional Materials, highlighted its industry-leading solutions for pharmaceutical packaging at the first-ever Pharmapack North America event in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 22-24. The company spotlighted its broad portfolio of desiccant canisters for moisture control in pharmaceutical packaging and its innovative IDC® Integrated Desiccant Closure, a pharmaceutical cap combining tamper-evident, child-resistant and twist-off functionalities with a built-in desiccant. Also, Genevieve Kuhn, R&D Group Leader, presented a technical session titled, “Moisture, Oxygen & Shelf Life: Keys to Packaging Performance to Enhance Quality of Patient Care.” Performance Packaging is a global leader in the design and manufacture of controlled atmosphere packaging solutions.

In addition to canisters and the IDC®, the company’s exhibit included its Advanced Desiccant Polymer (ADP®), which delivers exceptional adsorbent capabilities integrated directly into thermoplastics used in healthcare packaging. Customizable ADP® technology also enhances design freedom. Performance Packaging also showcased Oxy-Guard® barrier bottles, which effectively block oxygen ingress by a factor of 100 compared to regular bottles, and Handy Active Tubes®, which are durable, rigid containers with a convenient flip-top cap and built-in desiccant. Other products in the company’s pharmaceutical packaging portfolio include PharmaKeep® oxygen absorbers; desiccant stoppers and printed tubes; and a range of desiccant bags and packets.

Kuhn’s technical session, which came under the Pharmapack theme, “Exploring the Human Interaction with Pharmaceutical Packaging,” covered the effect of atmospheric packaging conditions on patient care, how to define shelf life, the use of specially engineered polymers, desiccants, and oxygen scavengers in various configurations, and ways to protect active ingredients in novel drug delivery and diagnostic systems from moisture and oxygen degradation.
