Stanyl® high performance polyamide:
SYSTEM COST REDUCTION IN GEARS
DSM Engineering Plastics’ Stanyl® high performance polyamide is the material of choice for the production of a wide range of gears: interior gears, motor management gears, steel replacement gears, electric power steering gears, etc.
Key benefits include greater design freedom, as a result of the material’s 150% higher stiffness, strength and creep resistance at temperatures of 150-220°C when compared to other PAs and PPAs. In addition, Stanyl® is able to deliver greater durability: extreme wear and abrasion resistance, as a result of its unmatched high fatigue, ductility and creep resistance thanks to its 70-80% crystallinity levels. Furthermore, when annealed, the parts display less dimensional change due to lower moisture uptake compared to PA66. Other benefits include lower system costs, lower weight and less noise compared to metals.
Stanyl® offers more design-to-the-limit possibilities as well as the opportunity to boost part performance for interior actuators operating under severe conditions especially versus other PA66 and PPA. Compared to metals lower system costs result from the integration possibilities and fewer secondary treatments that can be achieved, as well as noise and weight reduction. This is also true when Stanyl® is used to replace PEEK/Steel worms in interior actuators - without loss of performance - or when replacing steel gears in engines like oil pump driver, CAM gears, balancer gears and G-rotors and when replacing sintered metal in motor management gears such as ETC gears (Stanyl® has therefore been approved for various reduction gears and output gears from various OEMs).
High Performance Materials of DSM Engineering Plastics such as Stanyl® and Arnitel® do lead in specific cases such as gears and airducts to lower system costs even in comparison to standard materials as PA66 or rubber. The added value for the customer is generated by these materials in those cases by faster production cycles leading to lower processing costs per part , lower aftertreatment costs, greater freedom of design leading to lower material and/or processing costs per part and better part performance when compared to competitive high heat resins. When using Stanyl® high performance polyamide to replace metal there are additional benefits in weight reduction, noise reduction and further system cost reduction.
