Jaws Meet Their Match in Badinotti Predator Nets Featuring Super-Strong Dyneema® Fiber
Urmond (NL), March 22 - Badinotti S.p.A., an Italian company well-known for excellence in aquaculture nets, has introduced a new predator net for rotection of farmed fish that is made with Dyneema® fiber from DSM Dyneema. The world’s strongest fiber, Dyneema® enables Badinotti’s predator nets to provide improved resistance to bites and damage from seals and seawolfs, compared to nets made from traditional nylon and polyester. The Dyneema® fiber offers an exceptionally low weight-to-strength ratio for reduced tension on mooring lines and easier handling. It also resists UV light and abrasion for extended useful life.
The new Badinotti predator nets are double needle bar construction produced using knotless Raschel looms. They are designed for aquaculture including farmed salmon, tuna and cod and range in weight from 350 kg to more than 2,000 kg.
“DSM Dyneema is a real partner to our business. We began using the Dyneema® fiber about ten years ago and our customers have been very happy with its performance,” said Carlo Badinotti, Commercial Director Badinotti S.p.A. “Now we have turned again to the most resistant fiber in the world to protect farmed fish from predators that bite or tear ordinary nets. For our customers, Dyneema® fiber will help prevent monetary losses. For our company, it provides a competitive advantage.”
Compared to netting made of nylon and polyester, Badinotti’s new predator nets provide superior strength for resistance to external attacks, as well as biting and abrasion from farmed fish. Only one-third the weight of polyamide yarns, Dyneema® reduces tension on mooring systems, improves stability of the net configuration, and helps increase water flow.
Further, Dyneema® offers low water absorption for better manageability during maintenance and washing. Finally, nets made with Dyneema® fiber have been shown to perform in the water for eight years now, compared to four or five years for polyamide.

About DSM Dyneema
DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber. Dyneema® is a superstrong polyethylene fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight per weight basis. Dyneema® floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema® is an important component in ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries. Dyneema® is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema® is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel. Dyneema® is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands) and in Greenville, North Carolina (U.S.A.). DSM Dyneema also works in a HPPE fiber manufacturing joint venture with Toyobo (Japan).
