SHAKING HANDS OVER GLOVES: DSM DYNEEMA, MICROLIN COOPER SETTLE DISPUTE

The Netherlands, June 1, 2011 - “When end-users see our brand, they know it represents optimum safety and superb comfort”, says DSM Dyneema President Gerard de Reuver, reflecting his company’s firm commitment to protecting its brand values. “No one can claim to be using Dyneema® material, or use the Dyneema® trademark, without an official, explicit licensing agreement with us”.

It is with this message that DSM Dyneema welcomes the commitment of Microlin Cooper to make no further unauthorised use of the Dyneema® brand. Microlin Cooper had been using the Dyneema® trademark without permission on some of its cut-resistant gloves, but has agreed to halt this activity with immediate effect.

De Reuver adds: “Dyneema® is a premium material that has established itself in the cut-resistant gloves market for its excellent protective and long-wearing properties. It also provides the user with a high level of comfort. DSM Dyneema is committed to providing and improving its know-how as well as the performance and supply of Dyneema® products for the benefit of the market as a whole. This is why we feel obliged to protect this brand. In doing so we can ensure that users who see the name Dyneema® on a product can be confident of enjoying a performance product”.

DSM Dyneema authorizes only a limited number of glove producers around the world to use its brand, which may only be used for products approved by the company. Particularly in the case of personal protective equipment — where use of the wrong product could cause serious injury or worse — DSM Dyneema takes immediate action against unauthorized users of its trademark anywhere in the world and in all end-user markets.

About DSM Dyneema

DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber™. Dyneema® is an Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE) fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight for weight basis. Dyneema® fiber floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema® is an important component in ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries. Dyneema® is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema® is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel.

UHMWPE fiber from DSM Dyneema is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands) and in Greenville, North Carolina (U.S.A.). DSM Dyneema is also a partner in a high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) manufacturing joint venture in Japan.
