Datamed selects Eastar® copolyester for High-Tech Opto-Electronic device
Datamed of Milan (Rodano), Italy has selected Eastar® copolyester MN211 to produce a disposable plastic cuvette which snaps into the BLOP4, a very compact, easy to use and low cost probe to measure blood saturation and haematocrit values for extracorporeal blood circulation. BLOP4 with its simple disposable cuvette can be easily applied in any external units, thanks to its RS-232 data transfer protocol and to a very powerful SW.
Datamed selected Eastar copolyester MN211 following previous experience and positive evaluation of the material. Gianpiero Porro, Manager Development and Innovation at Datamed said: "This polymer meets the exacting medical requirements such as haemocompatible properties, transparency and chemical and mechanical resistance. The other quality which supported the selection of Eastman MN 211, was the ability to submit the cuvette to a solvent bonding process, necessary to connect it with the PVC tubing."
This assembly system also proved to be a key issue from a cost point of view, because it is much quicker and – consequently – less expensive. Porro: “Moreover, the Eastar copolyester shows better performances during the sterilization processes for these devices, compared to other possible types of polymer. After these kinds of processes, polycarbonate, for example, may become dangerously brittle and this may cause some decay of the mechanical strength, especially when one considers the “shelf life” required for these products.”
Eastar copolyester MN 211 meets all necessary requirements for this kind of device (EN 30993). It shows scratch and impact resistance and it demonstrates excellent compatibility with the PVC tubing. In fact the solvent bonding delivers a key cost saving for this device, 30.000 of which have already been produced since it was first introduced on the market.
Eastar copolyesters are brilliant and clear, with excellent impact strength, chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and low shrinkage rates. MN 211 also contains a mold release agent.
