INNOVATIVE NORYL® PKN RESIN FROM GE PLASTICS DESIGNED FOR FREEZER-TO-MICROWAVE PACKAGING
Bergen op Zoom - September 2003 - Based on growing demand for ready to cook; freezer to microwave meals, a number of exciting new products and technologies have just been created to address the increasing market for more aesthetically versatile, cost efficient, and environmentally sensitive materials.
An exciting new product family introduced by GE Plastics is formed by the NORYL® PKN (PPO® /polystyrene alloy) resin, offering a wide range of performance capabilities that make it a strong candidate for the microwave packaging industry. These include increased stiffness at higher temperatures reducing the risk of hot food spills as well as an excellent impact performance at freezer temperatures compared to common polypropylene (PP) based materials.
" Based on it’s exceptional property performance balance, we expect NORYL PKN resin can be a great fit for many freezer-to-microwave packaging applications, ” said Rob de Jong, GE Plastics Industry Manager for Performance Packaging in Europe. “From the food packagers’ perspective, NORYL PKN resin do offer a lower cost alternative for PP and polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) materials due to their outstanding processing characteristics," Jong added.
Among all of the resins currently available, including PS, CPET, and PP, NORYL PKN4766 resin offers the combination of transparency, microwaveability, and low system cost.
The NORYL PKN portfolio presently includes six commercial grades- transparent and opaque-covering a wide heat resistance range. NORYL PKN4717 resin is specifically developed for foamed applications.
NORYL resin was formally introduced to the market in 1964. It has always been known for its chemical resistance, flame and heat resistance, low specific gravity, and low moisture absorption. Now, improved flow also joins the list of inherent benefits. NORYL resin offers eco-friendly, market-tailored performance, outstanding processing, and enhanced productivity in applications such as computers and business equipment, electrical, consumer electronics, appliances, telecommunications, and automotive.
