GREAT LAKES INTRODUCES A NEW FLAME RETARDANT FOR FLEXIBLE POLYURETHANE FOAMS, Firemaster® 550 is Commercialised

DÜSSELDORF, Germany – Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today announced the introduction of a new high performance flame retardant for flexible polyether and polyester polyurethane foams.

Firemaster® 550 is a new, non-scorch, phosphorus-bromine flame retardant based on proprietary Great Lakes technology. This new flame retardant offers all the advantages of the long-established Great Lakes DE-60F™ Special without utilising brominated diphenyl ether (brominated diphenyl oxide) chemistry.

Firemaster® 550 is a low viscosity liquid with good compatibility in polyurethane systems where it disperses uniformly and produces white foams with fine cell structure and good hand and physical properties. Firemaster® 550 typically provides 30-50% lower compression set than other flame retardants used in polyurethane foams. Since Firemaster® 550 does not cause centre softening in HR foams, it is particularly effective in CO2 blown systems.

Additionally, foams formulated with Firemaster® 550 meet MVSS 302, CAL TB 117 parts A and D, as well as the more stringent UL94 HF-1 specification.
