Great Lakes announces price increase for a range of brominated flame retardants

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today announced a worldwide price increase of 10 percent for a range of brominated flame retardants, effective for shipments after December 7, 2003, or where contracts allow.

Prices will increase for Great Lakes brominated flame retardants and derivatives including:

* Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) … Great Lakes CD-75P™ and SP-75™ series

* Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBA) … Great Lakes BA-59P™

* Tribromophenol additives (TBP) … Great Lakes PH-73FF™

The company stated that the new pricing is driven by increasing energy and raw material costs and ongoing environmental and regulatory costs.

HBCD products provide a high level of flame retardant performance to polystyrene foams. TBBA is an effective flame retardant for epoxy resins used in printed circuit boards and other thermoplastic electronics applications. TBP, a reactive flame retardant, is most often used as an intermediate in the manufacture of polymeric brominated flame retardants.

Great Lakes is the world’s leading producer of brominated flame retardants, sold under the Great Lakes name and the FIREMASTER® brand, that provide flame retardancy to a broad range of polymers used in applications such as building and construction, electrical components, wire and cable, and information technology equipment.

Through its Polymer Additives division, Great Lakes offers the world leading line of bromine-, phosphorus-, and antimony-based flame retardants and other synergists, as well as a full line of UV stabilizers, antioxidants, blends, and optical monomers.
