Milliken Chemical and Domo PPC collaborate in developing an advanced benefit masterbatch for polypropylene

Gent, Belgium – Following a year of technical collaboration with Milliken Chemical, the global leader in clarifying and colouring agents for polypropylene (PP), Domo Polypropylene Compounds (Domo PPC), has announced the launch of Tecnoline® P1-602-N2-N, an advanced nucleator masterbatch. Developed specifically to save the injection moulder time and money, Tecnoline P1-602-N2-N represents an important step forward in productivity enhancement.

“As part of our ongoing product development programme we were seeking a processing advance that would add new benefits for customers using PP resin, particularly for injection moulding,” says Domo’s Sales Manager Compounds, Marc Leyers.

“Essentially we wanted to create a masterbatch that improved the material’s processability and reduced its cycle time, thereby giving moulders the possibility to increase productivity without having to invest in additional machines. With its special expertise in PP additive technology Milliken was the obvious choice as a development partner.”

The result of that co-operation is Domo’s Tecnoline P1-602-N2-N masterbatch, a nucleator for PP applications that can reduce cycle times by as much as 30%. Tecnoline P1-602-N2-N builds on Milliken’s Hyperform® HPN 68L, a new hyper-nucleating agent. Superior to commonly used nucleating technology, Hyperform has the highest crystallization onset temperature available in PP. This allows extremely fast crystallization of the polymer and gives significant acceleration in processing speed.

However, according to Marc Leyers, faster cycling was only one of the benefits added by Milliken’s core Hyperform technology. Even in very low concentrations HPN 68L also promotes improved and more consistent isotropic shrinkage of the final part, while maintaining a good balance of stiffness and impact performance. Improved isotropic shrinkage, because HPN 68L contributes to increased dimensional stability thereby reducing warpage and improving quality in the final part.

“These performance characteristics are particularly valuable as Tecnoline P1-602-N2-N is principally directed to moulders of technical parts with complex designs, for which cycle times tend to be longer and therefore faster processing without compromising quality brings greater benefits”, he says.

“In collaborating on the development of Tecnoline P1-602-N2-N, we integrated Hyperform technology with Domo’s Domolen® polypropylene resin as the base carrier,” explains Diederik Goyvaerts, Milliken’s Key Account Manager. “We had an open, technology sharing relationship with Domo and this helped to quickly establish the synergies between the technical teams of both companies, which was key to the success of the development, especially during the masterbatch and compound testing phases,” he says.

Subsequently Milliken has extended its co-operation with Domo by contributing to the search for opportunities to bring Tecnoline to the market, and this joint effort is already delivering good results in Europe.
