25 November 2025 – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, welcomed international customers and partners to celebrate the inauguration of its state-of-the-art paper machine at its Štětí mill in the Czech Republic.
The new machine was successfully started up in December 2024 and meets the growing customer demand for paper-based flexible packaging, driven by eCommerce and an increasing focus on sustainability. It will produce around 210,000 tonnes of high-performance kraft paper per year, delivering a broad range of high-strength and high-porosity grades for construction, industrial and eCommerce applications, further advancing Mondi’s commitment to offering customers packaging and paper solutions that are sustainable by design.
The new paper machine forms part of a €400 million investment in the mill enhancing Mondi’s ability to provide customers with a reliable supply of kraft paper and to support their transition to renewable and recyclable paper-based solutions. It also enables Mondi to optimise production across its wider kraft paper portfolio offering customers a full range of high-quality speciality kraft papers, including functional barrier grades.
The inauguration event held earlier this month celebrated Mondi’s commitment to long-term partnerships, circularity and sustainable growth. More than 130 customers and partners joined the celebration to see the new paper machine in operation.
Speaking at the event, Andrew King, Mondi Group CEO, said: “This is more than a paper machine, it is a symbol of what we can achieve when innovation, sustainability and teamwork come together. It enables us to continue delivering great service to our customers and the high-quality packaging materials they want to help them achieve their sustainability goals.”
Miroslav Zitka, Managing Director of the Štětí mill, and Vladimir Krajci, Project Director Mondi Kraft Paper, shared insights into the project’s journey from design to start-up, highlighting the teamwork, safety and dedication that ensured the project was completed on time and on budget. The day also featured a panel discussion with customers, machine producers and industry experts discussing market trends, sustainability, and the importance of collaboration across the packaging value chain.
The event concluded with guided tours of the new machine, networking and celebrations, marking a proud moment for Mondi and its partners.

FAQs
What sustainable paper-based alternatives are being used for flexible packaging applications?
Sustainable paper-based alternatives used for flexible packaging applications include high-performance kraft papers among other paper-based solutions. One example is kraft paper produced at Mondi’s Štětí mill, which supplies high-strength and high-porosity grades supporting renewable and recyclable packaging formats for industrial, construction, and eCommerce applications.
What types of applications require high-strength and high-porosity kraft paper?
High-strength and high-porosity kraft paper is used in applications requiring durability, breathability, and process performance, including construction materials, industrial packaging, and eCommerce shipping. These paper properties support flexible packaging formats while enabling renewable and recyclable alternatives aligned with sustainability requirements across multiple end-use markets.
What role do paper machine investments play in sustainable packaging transitions?
Paper machine investments play a role in sustainable packaging transitions by expanding production of paper-based materials designed for renewable and recyclable packaging. New machines, including Mondi’s paper machine at the Štětí mill in the Czech Republic, increase capacity and enable portfolio optimisation to support the availability of paper-based alternatives, particularly in flexible packaging segments influenced by sustainability and eCommerce growth.
What is the production capacity of Mondi’s new paper machine at the Štětí mill?
Mondi’s new paper machine at the Štětí mill in the Czech Republic produces approximately 210,000 tonnes of high-performance kraft paper per year. The machine was successfully started up in December 2024 and supplies a range of high-strength and high-porosity grades for packaging and industrial applications.
