PPG and GM Win PACE Award for Color Specific Automotive Primer
(July 10th, 2006--Shanghai, China)PPG has earned its fifth PACE Award in six years for its collaboration with General Motors on the development of an environmentally friendly, color-specific powder primer.
The joint award for PPG and GM was one of only two collaborative PACE Awards presented in ceremonies held in Detroit in April.
According to Rick Tansey, technical manager, PPG, the color-specific powder primer has a high-gloss finish and is tinted to match a vehicle's paint color. It provides a finished look for hard-to-paint areas such as inner surfaces of trunk and engine compartments.
"Customers love the glossy, colorful finish coat on the outside of a car, but that coat is expensive and difficult to apply on many inner surfaces," Tansey said. "Our new color-specific powder primer improves aesthetics at an effective cost."
PPG and GM launched the joint development effort five years ago to replace liquid-solvent primers with an environmentally friendly, cost-effective product. In addition to containing no volatile organic compounds (VOC), the color-specific powder primer eliminates the sludge and hazardous material generated by liquid solvent systems. The color-specific powder primer is used on the 2005 Chevrolet Colbalt at the GM assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
