PPreX® clarified PP preforms set to revolutionize cost structures for transparent drinks bottles

The introduction of PPreX® clarified PP preforms provides drinks industry end users and their converters with a unique solution for bottles that delivers significantly lower total production costs in combination with excellent transparency, as well as ease and speed of processing on standard injection stretch blow moulding machines (ISBM).

Developed by PPaM International, PPreX technology builds on the cost and weight advantages of PP and adds outstanding clarity and enhanced processibility to create a PPreX preform that sets new standards in the economy and quality of blow moulded bottle packaging.

According to PPaM Marketing Director, Kristoffel François: “We have developed PPreX to support a growing industry trend to offer new solutions for clear plastic packaging. Until now the clarity demanded in these applications could only be met by PET, however with PPreX we have engineered an alternative solution that is revolutionary in its cost structure and uncompromising in performance and presentation.”

Designed specifically for symmetrical bottles for non-carbonated water, juices and sport drinks, PPreX can bring total system cost savings of between 10-20% to cold-fill and 20-30% lower cost for hot-fill applications, for which it needs no special treatment and incurs no extra cost. And, of key importance, PPreX technology enables the doubling of the production speed previously achievable with PP preforms in the injection stretch blow moulding process. With a yield of 1500 bottles an hour PPreX matches the speed of PET, at the same time giving the advantage of lower cost.

“PPreX has the potential to change the value curve of the packaging industry,” says PPaM Technical Director, Danny Vanden Boer: “We believe that in respect of every relevant characteristic of drinks packaging PPreX offers a substantial improvement. To achieve that level of advance we partnered with industry supply chain leaders who included: PP producer Borealis, clarifying additive producer Milliken, ISBM maker Sidel and several end-users to develop and ensure full optimization of the PPreX concept”.

Also, PPaM has invested in a complete set-up of equipment, including an ISBM machine (SB04), to be able to serve the drinks industry.

While the materials and processes on which PPreX is based exist separately, PPaM is the only preform specialist to harness the technologies and master the process parameters to enable the consolidated technology to deliver its full benefits to the market.
