Validation of Polygiene™ resin performance against SARS-CoV and pathogenic bacteria.

BEIJING – March 30, 2004 – Polygiene resin has been specially formulated to provide rapid elimination of the SARS coronavirus, the validity of which was clearly demonstrated by the results of tests carried out, late 2003, by China’s Military Academy of Medical Science, Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology. These tests specifically focused on the antiSARS-CoV effectiveness of five different formulations of urea moulding compound at different times of contact. While all of the formulations were found to be relatively active against the virus, the final Polygiene formulation was based on the (designated S2) formulation, which exhibited the fastest and most impressive attack on the SARS coronavirus. Testing on the Polygiene compound showed significant statistical activity at 2, 4, 8, and 24 hours, especially when compared with the control material, a thermoplastic resin.

Activity shown by the Polygiene compound over 2, 4 and 8 hours demonstrated that Polygiene can completely kill the SARS coronavirus on the surface of a moulded device. Currently no other products have demonstrated this level of suppression when exposed to SARS. Furthermore, it must be considered that laboratory tests are far more stringent than reality. The person-to-person contamination, especially through droplet, never contains as high a concentration of virus as used in laboratory ( ~1.000.000 /ml) but is considerably lower at (100 ÷ 1.000/ml).

While antiSARS activity was tested by the Military Academy of Medical Science of Beijing, antimicrobial activity was tested by Italy’s University of Milan’s Institute of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine (using the Film Contact Method).

In these tests, standard and antimicrobial grades of urea were moulded into plaques, then exposed to seven strains of pathogenic bacteria and one strain of yeast. These include:

• Escherichia coli

• Klebsiella pneumoniae

• Proteus vulgaris

• Salmonella typhi

• Staphylococcus aureus

• Streptococcus faecalis

• Streptococcus pyogenes

• Candida albicans

All of which can cause a broad range of serious illnesses and disease in humans ranging from abdominal cramps, urinary tract infections, and pneumonia, to toxic shock syndrome, scarlet and typhoid fever, to autoimmune disease and even death.

According to the test results from the University of Milan study, “In general, the antimicrobial effect of Polygiene resins was always better than the standard urea-formaldehyde moulding compound. The Polygiene moulding compound shows a better antibacterial effect on all the bacteria species examined and the yeast.” The Polyiene resins were found not just to contain the growth of these microorganisms, but also to actually kill them within 24 hours.

Like the SARS tests, the levels of microorganisms used in the Milan protocols were several orders of magnitude higher than would normally be seen in person-to-person contact, yet the Polygiene technology successfully killed the microbes.
