Making Sanitary Ware Really Hygienic

Antibacteria sanitary ware attracts market’s attention

At the 3rd China International Green Building Materials Exhibition Perstorp AB, of Sweden, is displaying a range of its customers sanitary ware products which incorporate Polygiene™ an antibacterial technology developed by the company which has been proven to kill many kinds of bacteria and virus, including the SARS corona virus. Products incorporating Polygiene breaks the transmission path of many diseases by killing bacteria and viruses on contact.

Along with the constant improvements in the Chinese people’s living standards, people are becoming more concerned with individual health and hygiene, especially in public facilities such as hospitals, hotels, and restaurant. Obviously, no one wants to share tooth brushes or towels with others, but normally we cannot have a proprietary toilet. Even the toilet in our houses might be a source of disease transmission.

What appears to be the cleanest toilet could be a transmission point for many kinds of infectious disease. In some public wash rooms we often see people stand on the toilet seat or cover the toilet seat with paper to reduce the risks of contact. Experts point out that even by takings this type of action you still cannot resist the attack since paper cannot withstand the micro scale bacteria and viruses.

Toilet seats and other products which incorporate Polygiene technology are a clear solution to these issues. Tests carried out in 2003 by China's Military Academy of Science, Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, have shown that Polygiene can completely kill the extremely resistant SARS corona virus on the surface of a moulded device inside eight hours. Currently no other products have demonstrated this level of suppression when exposed to SARS.

Unlike some other antibacterial agents, it is inorganic, and does not lead to allergic skin reactions. Products utilizing Polygiene technology also differ from other antibacterial products in that the active ingredient is distributed uniformly throughout the designed part, and not just on the surface. This means that, as opposed to a coating, it cannot wear off, and surface damage has no effect. Nor does the efficacy of Polygiene deteriorate over time.

“China’s population density is high, so the danger of the spread of disease is also high, we feel Polygiene can make a contribution toward helping China to improve public hygiene conditions”, said Mr. Luigi Mocchia from Perstorp AB. “This is why we original turned to China's Military Academy of Science, Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology to help with the original testing of the product and why we chose China as the country to launch Polygiene”.

Perstorp launched Polygiene in China earlier this year and is receiving a great deal of positive interest from the market. Two main European sanitary ware manufactures Saniplast from Italy and Pressalit from Denmark are already producing a range of sanitary aware products based on Polygiene technology, the samples of these products are on display at the China International Green Building Materials Exhibition.

Polygiene is a registered trademark of Perstorp, AB.

In response to the growing international concern over the spread of diseases and infections such as SARS-CoV, Polygiene™ was developed by Perstorp for use in applications requiring even higher sanitary levels than in the past. Not only are device manufacturers showing interest in this material, but hotel chains, hospitals and clinics, restaurants, airports, public buildings, and mass-transit operations are becoming increasingly interested, as well.
