Rohm and Haas Participates “2007 China Responsible Care Conference”, Actively Promoting

October 29, 2007, Shanghai, China - Rohm and Haas, the leading global specialty material company, announced its participation in the “2007 China Responsible Care Conference”, held by The Association of International Chemical Manufacturers Ltd. (AICM) and China Petroleum and the Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) from October 30 to November 1, 2007, in Shanghai. During the conference, Rohm and Haas shared its experience in promoting and executing ‘Responsible Care’ in China.

Dr. Lewis Philip, Rohm and Haas EHS&SD Global Vice President, and the Chairman of Responsible Care Leadership Group of ICCA, updated the audience on the implementation of “Responsible Care Global Charter”. According to Lewis, 52 chemical industry associations and 127 multinational chemical companies have currently signed the global charter. Besides this, more and more emerging economies will join. Russia for instance, signed the charter this October. In November, APEC will host the Asia Pacific Responsible Care Conference in Malaysia, with the purpose of promoting Responsible Care in the region. Dr. Dong Lingzhen, Rohm and Haas EHS & SD Asia Pacific Director also delivered an important speech on “Community Awareness and Emergency Response”.

Dr. Lewis Philip was excited to witness and support the 2007 China Responsible Care Conference in Shanghai. He said, “China is one of the fastest growing markets for global petroleum and chemical industries, we hope to see a dynamic and booming China, a nation continuously improving itself on the basis of health, safety, environment and sustainable development. The goal of 2007 China Responsible Care Conference is to build up a platform for all the players in the industry to share their experience on responsible care and in the end to help Chinese chemical producers, downstream users and government officials to enhance awareness and understanding of Responsible Care and to guide corporations supervising the product.”

Lewis further pointed out, “As an initiator of global Responsible Care, Rohm and Haas has been aware of the importance of Responsible Care for many years. We are willing to set up an example for the industry through our efforts and practices, to help enterprises move toward the direction that is beneficial for society, economic development and environmental protection. Rohm and Haas firmly complies with the local regulations and laws, and voluntarily makes a commitment to Responsible Care.

As one of the biggest specialty materials manufacturers, Rohm and Haas has set a good example for the industry in promoting responsible care and improving quality of life. This could be seen from a series of actions that the company has taken in the past half century, from the introduction of water-based coating, to Haas Memo, the signatory of International Chamber of Commerce Charter on SD, working out the Sustainable Improvement Objectives, forming the Board Committee on Sustainable Development, launch of Eco-Efficiency Website-Water /Energy, and conducting Responsible Care Management System Audit. Rohm and Haas is the signatory to Responsible Care Global Charter, one of the first companies to achieve the American Chemistry Council verification requirements, and one of the first companies completing the first voluntary verification of Responsible Care performance. Additionally, Rohm and Haas also carries out a single set of EHS&SD standards worldwide. Every year, Rohm and Haas invests 4% of the sales revenue in R&D for the development of high quality and environmentally friendly fine chemicals. In 2007, for example, the company spent 50% of its R&D budget on product and process innovation, and sustainable product development. Consequently, Rohm and Haas has been one of a very few companies that have received two US Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards so far, together with other awards for its outstanding contributions to Responsible Care.
