SABIC Innovative Plastics’ Next-Gen Lexan* EXL Resin Gives Motorola Customized Environmental-Edge for World’s First Carbon Neutral Phone

CHICAGO – June 22, 2009 – SABIC Innovative Plastics’ and Motorola’s close collaboration has resulted in the co-development of new Lexan* EXL 8414 polycarbonate (PC) resin, a sustainable, high-tech and fully customized thermoplastic resin made specifically for Motorola’s MOTO™ W233 Renew mobile phone – the world’s first certified carbon neutral device. The new, eco-engineered resin contains up to 25 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) content from discarded water bottles; takes approximately 20 percent less energy to process; and, in addition to greatly enhanced sustainability, gives the new Motorola Renew exceptional high-performance properties. SABIC Innovative Plastics introduced the new Lexan* EXL 8414 resin technology here today at NPE 2009 in booth W123011.

Exatec* Glazing Shifts into High-Gear Production of Protective Shields Based on SABIC Innovative Plastics’ Tough Lexan* Sheet for the TTC

CHICAGO – June 22, 2009 – Today at NPE 2009, SABIC Innovative Plastics introduced a new, high-tech shield to enhance the protection of transit operators in Toronto. This new high-value operator protection is made of Lexan* sheet and coated with the Exatec* E900 advanced plasma technology at Exatec’s facility in Wixom, Mich. The combined high impact strength and optical clarity of Lexan sheet and the excellent abrasion resistance of the Exatec coating, led the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to equip its fleet with new shields to help prevent assaults on TTC operators, which average one per day. The advanced Lexan sheet/Exatec E900 plasma technology shield is SABIC Innovative Plastics’ latest example of how it is addressing critical customer needs with practical yet highly advanced material innovations.

CHICAGO – June 22, 2009 – Underscoring its focus on customer collaboration and innovation, SABIC Innovative Plastics has helped a key customer – Karbon Kinetics Ltd. (KKL) – break away from the pack and ride to success with a unique new bicycle that uses high-value Verton* RV00CE specialty compound. KKL’s new Gocycle® electric bicycle – on display here at NPE 2009 in SABIC booth W123011 – is the lightest production electric bicycle in the world. It weighs just 16.2kg and yet is extremely durable, thanks in large part to high-performance Verton composite, a 60-percent long glass fiber-reinforced nylon composite that gives the award-winning Gocycle extreme stiffness, impact strength, exceptional toughness and reliability. The new fold-up bicycle offers clean electric power and an aesthetic, seamless design that gives the rider a no-effort ride with no emissions. It is an environmentally responsible, low-cost urban transport solution that meets all European Union (EU) and U.S. city cycle testing standards.
