SABIC Makes a Splash at Fakuma with New NORYL™ Resin, Meeting Tightening Global Regulations for Materials in Potable Water Systems

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany, October 16, 2012 - Here at the Fakuma trade fair, booth #B5-5506, SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business today announced a new NORYL™ resin that not only complies with current European and global sustainability regulations governing materials used in potable water systems, but also with new, tougher regulations slated to go into effect in 2016. Developed at SABIC’s Fluid Engineering Center of Excellence in the Netherlands, NORYL FE1630PW resin is a 30-percent glass-reinforced polyphenylene ether (PPE) that offers excellent hydrological performance in both cold and hot water systems. The next-generation resin also meets tightening global specifications regarding compliance of glass fiber and sizing with U.S. and European food contact requirements. This PPE technology advancement further demonstrates SABIC’s proactive efforts to provide the fluid engineering industry with higher-performing, compliant materials that lead regulatory changes.

SABIC to Launch High Performing HDPE Healthcare grade for Large Containers at Innopack 2012

SITTARD, The Netherlands, October 10, 2012 - In close cooperation with Mauser, a well-known supplier of blow moulded industrial packaging solutions, a grade of high density polyethylene (HDPE) intended to meet the demands typically required of large containers used in healthcare applications has been developed by SABIC. SABIC® HDPE PCG4906 specifications may be applicable for such products as jerry cans, open-head and tight-head drums, and Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), as well as for blow moulded bottles.

SABIC and ULVAC Announce Availability of New ULGLAZE System for High-volume Plasma Coating of Automotive PC Glazing Components

BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands, October 11, 2012 - SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business, a world leader in engineering thermoplastics and advanced material solutions, and ULVAC, Inc., a leader in mass-production vacuum technologies, today announced the commercial availability of the new, state-of-the-art ULGLAZE system for high-volume production of plasma-coated polycarbonate (PC) components for automotive glazing applications. The ULGLAZE machine is manufactured at ULVAC’s facility in Chiagasaki, Japan and was developed as part of a two-year collaboration between SABIC and ULVAC. Optimized for LEXAN™ resin and EXATEC™ plasma coatings from SABIC, this unique solution now enables automotive OEMs and tiers to mass produce lightweight, durable and aerodynamic glazing components – like rear quarter and side windows, backlite windows, rear spoilers and sunroofs – that deliver exceptional performance and aesthetics over the life of the vehicle. The availability of this technology marks a significant milestone in enabling automakers to take full advantage of PC glazing to create lighter vehicles for improved fuel efficiency and performance. In addition, this achievement demonstrates the power of proactive collaboration between two technology leaders on behalf of the automotive industry, which now has the tools to adopt PC glazing cost-effectively and on a broad scale.

Raising the Bar with SABIC’s First Thermoplastic for Rail Seat Backs and Covers that Meet Highest Hazard Level of New Fire Safety Standard

BERLIN, Germany, September 20, 2012 - SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business today announced new LEXAN™ FST3403 (flame-smoke-toxicity) polycarbonate (PC) copolymer, the first thermoplastic solution for rail seating applications to meet the strictest fire safety requirements under the CEN/TS 45545 standard. Now commercial a full two years before this European standard goes into effect, new high-performance LEXAN FST3403 copolymer – developed specifically for seat back shells and side covers – achieved the highest possible hazard level rating (HL3) under CEN/TS 45545-2 R5. In addition to its exceptional heat release, smoke density and toxicity performance, documented by independent laboratory testing, the LEXAN FST copolymer delivers high flow properties for injection molding large parts with excellent aesthetics and impact strength. Today’s new product launch demonstrates SABIC’s commitment to meeting evolving public safety standards with tailored thermoplastic solutions that support the needs of transportation industry customers.

SABIC Helps GRAMMER Lead Rail Industry with New Railway Seating Solution to Proactively Comply with Strict European Fire Safety Standard

BERLIN, Germany, September 21, 2012 - Here at InnoTrans 2012 at the Berlin Messe, Hall 5.1, booth #228, SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business is showcasing GRAMMER Railway Interior GmbH’s tough, new seat back shells and side panels for first-class railcars that comply with Europe’s upcoming CEN/TS 45545 harmonized standard for fire safety. Using SABIC’s new LEXAN™ FST (flame-smoke-toxicity) copolymer – which meets requirements for the highest hazard level (HL3) under CEN/TS 45545-2 – SABIC worked with GRAMMER on their development of the seating components two years ahead of the standard’s implementation. Importantly, the LEXAN FST copolymer can be moulded into GRAMMER’s existing tooling, avoiding significant capital costs and provides exceptionally high flow, which enables large parts to be injection molded with high-quality aesthetics. Pedestrian Safety Undertray Molded from SABIC’s Xenoy iQ* Resin Helps Ford C-MAX Earn Euro NCAP Five-Star Rating

BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – August 23, 2011 – Xenoy iQ* resin from SABIC’s Innovative Plastics strategic business unit – chosen by Ford for the pedestrian safety system of its 2011 C-MAX multipurpose vehicle (MPV) – has helped the automaker earn a five-star rating from the independent safety organization Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program). The C-MAX’s pedestrian safety system features a novel lower leg protector/undertray design using SABIC’s Xenoy iQ resin. The inherent physical properties of Xenoy iQ resin make it a highly suitable material for the Ford C-MAX’s pedestrian safety system. The resin’s superior ductility and great impact resistance, when combined with the part design, provide the energy absorption needed for enhanced lower leg impact protection. The resin is also a great fit with Ford’s commitment to sustainability as it offers thermoplastic properties with an extremely low carbon footprint. Overall, use of Xenoy iQ resin in this case demonstrate how SABIC enables both environmental responsibility and exceptional performance.

SABIC adds impact copolymer to Flowpact range of Polypropylenes for thin wall packaging

Sittard, the Netherlands – June 9, 2011 – SABIC is adding to its range of polypropylenes for thin-wall injection moulding applications with a new impact copolymer grade, SABIC® PP Flowpact FPC 100.
