Pioneering composite materials based on Victrex® PEEK™ polymer
The European Glass Division of Porcher Industries Group, a global leader in the production of high strength woven composites using glass, carbon, aramid and silica, has developed a new range of composites based on a Victrex® PEEK™ polymer carrier.
This important breakthrough is founded on Porcher’s unique new combination technology that provides greater flexibility in the selection of reinforcing materials and their concentration. The ability to produce small quantities of test samples allows precise tailoring to meet customers’ specific needs. The composites are delivered as flexible materials which are used to directly produce parts without any further material addition.
PEEK™ polymer is a unique engineering material, which offers a high performance profile. Its key properties include superior mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, (up to 300°C with continuous reinforcement), outstanding friction and wear resistance, excellent performance in chemical and irradiated environments and inherent low flammability, low toxicity and low smoke emission in fire situations.
Composite materials based on a PEEK™ polymer carrier therefore expand the use of thermoplastic composites into industry sectors such as aerospace and medical where materials based on traditional high performance fibres have failed to satisfy critical performance criteria.
