Mexican production facility underlines conTeyor’s commitment to support its North American customers
Merelbeke, Belgium, Dec. 15, 2003 – conTeyor, the leading European provider of textile-based packaging and materials handling solutions to automotive OEMs and tiers, has started-up a production facility in Mexico on August 1, 2003. The facility is located at Irapuato, two and a half hours drive North of Mexico City.
The new plant provides an immediate resource for local Mexican customers as well as a valuable complement to conTeyor North America, which is located in Detroit (Troy, Michigan) and supports customers in the automotive heartlands of the USA, Canada and Mexico. Further US expansion will see the establishment of a sales and engineering office in the Atlanta area that will enable conTeyor to give even closer support to local OEMs such as BMW, Mercedes and Nissan.
On the completion of conTeyor’s current plan, Irapuato will have the same production capacity as the company’s European manufacturing facility in Poland. Moreover, it will also offer the same level of design engineering capability to support customers on a regional basis with the development of custom-tailored Multibag® and Fitbox® systems.
conTeyor’s design engineering services include CAD-based concept development and design engineering, prototyping and the pre-series production of returnable materials handling solutions that deliver outstanding component protection combined with optimized ergonomics.
In addition to expansion in Mexico and North America, in line with its philosophy to deliver local support to its global customers, conTeyor continues to broaden its reach within Europe where it has recently opened offices in Gothenburg, Sweden; Barcelona, Spain and Turin, Italy. These now add to the existing network in Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom.
ConTeyor’s Multibag and Fitbox systems optimize the logistics and transportation of components from tier suppliers to OEM locations. Providing innovative and high packing density solutions, conTeyor systems offer customers the possibility to avoid significant costs, as well as benefit from cost savings they can achieve in logistics and transportation. Moreover, unlike materials handling systems generally available, conTeyor solutions are available in a range of 50 materials and are customized to precisely match the handling and protection criteria of specific components. Key is that the solutions are embodied in Europe-originated, new ‘smart’ innovative designs.
The close proximity of Irapuato to existing automotive OEMs and supplier tiers was key to its selection for the new plant. An additional location advantage is provided by the presence of textile production, the second largest industry in the area and a valuable knowledge-resource on which to draw.
Production start-up in Mexico is central to conTeyor’s three years forward plan which is focused on developing its North American operations to mirror its established, successful European organisation. This mirroring will be reflected in the number of staff on the ground, service offering and manufacturing capability, with the objective of delivering enhanced services to customers throughout Mexico, the United States and Canada. Resulting benefits will include increased availability of sales and engineering support, shorter lead times by up to 50% and reduced costs that will come from production within the NAFTA region and the elimination of import duties.
