Die Elektroinnovation scheint gekommen zu sein. Nach der International Energy Agency waren Ende 2020 weltweit schon mehr als 10 Millionen Elektrofahrzeuge (EVs) auf der Straße – ein Zuwachs von 43 % gegenüber 2019. Schätzungen zufolge wird die Gesamtzahl der elektrisch betriebenen Personenkraftwagen, Busse, Liefer- und Nutzfahrzeuge bis Ende dieses Jahrzehnts auf 145 Millionen steigen. Selbst 230 Millionen wären erreichbar, wenn genügend Länder ihre Emissionsziele noch ehrgeiziger fassen. Fahrzeughersteller investieren Milliarden, um sich ihren Anteil in diesem Markt zu sichern. Eine der Herausforderungen, denen sie in der Massenfertigung elektrischer Fahrzeuge gegenüberstehen, ist deren Brandschutz – doch wahrscheinlich in anderer Hinsicht, als die meisten Menschen denken.

SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A inactivated by zinc-embedded nylon fabric
An international team of scientists and engineers from the University of Cambridge, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, ResInnova Labs and Ascend Performance Materials has found that a nylon fabric embedded with zinc ions successfully inactivated 99% of the viruses that cause COVID-19 and the common flu.
