Bosworth Plastics of Hinckley, Leicestershire, UK, has successfully launched a patented, all-plastic system for joining concrete segments for the construction of tunnels. The Dowelock™ system, which requires no bolts or screws and suffers none of the corrosion problems associated with traditional metal dowels, is the result of nearly four years of technical development effort in conjunction with polymer supplier DuPont and its UK distributor Distrupol. The Dowelock is already being used in two UK tunnelling contracts, one of which is the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

DSM Engineering Plastics’ Arnitel-TPE monolithic thermoplastic polyetherester elastomer resin grade for coated film production is now available globally for breathable membranes. DSM’s Arnitel-TPE provides a breathable film—permeable by water vapor and gases—yet waterproof. In Europe, the Film Division of Lenzing AG (Lenzing, Austria) has chosen Arnitel-TPE as the best-in-class material for their roofing applications. With Arnitel film Lenzing can make an excellent film for roof underlinings and roof, wall and floor applications because of Arnitel’s high breathability and good water barrier.

One of the best and most recent examples of this is the specification of LEXAN® THERMOCLEAR® sheet as the roof glazing material for six of the stadiums that host the UEFA Euro 2004™ football tournament in Portugal. LEXAN THERMOCLEAR sheet provides excellent light transmission, high impact resistance and good weatherability – and will require minimal maintenance. For these particular stadiums, more than 74,000m² of both side UV protected LEXAN THERMOCLEAR sheet has been installed at the six venues In Portugal.
