ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands, 15 April 2005 – The European Union ban on nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) and its intermediate, nonylphenol (NP), at one time threatened compromises in surfactant performance for makers of products from detergent to biocides. That situation has changed: Univar N.V., a world leader in chemical distribution, has begun distributing its Caflon® brand of substitutes for NPE surfactants and NP-free intermediates throughout Europe.

Eastman Chemical Company today announced the release of Optifilm Enhancer 300, a low odour, zero VOC coalescent for the European architectural coatings market. Optifilm Enhancer 300 has a boiling point greater than 250 degrees C, which classifies it a non-VOC according to European Union Directive 2004/42/EC.

New initiatives in wire & cable coating materials are announced by DSM Engineering Plastics, a business group within the DSM N.V. (Euronext Amsterdam:DSM) Performance Materials cluster. In addition to its existing family of Arnitel® copolyether-ester and copolyester-ester (COPE or TEEE) elastomeric wire coating materials, DSM is developing new grades for this segment. As well, the assignment of Francis Aussems as Application Development and Technical Service Manager with special focus on wire applications provides a dedicated resource to the wire and cable segment.

Univar Europe, a business unit of Univar N.V., the leading independent chemical distributor in the world, has been appointed by Shell Chemicals Europe B.V. (SCE) as distributor of their solvents range in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The agreement took effect April 1st of this year. Univar’s strong distribution and logistics network in Scandinavia underpinned Shell’s decision, as did the opportunity to make its supply chain simpler and more efficient.

International Specialty Products Inc (ISP) has announced that, through its subsidiaries, it has acquired the business of Biochema Schwaben. Biochema is an established formulator of preservatives and biocides for industrial and personal care applications.
