Joint development between Durel GmbH and DSM Engineering Plastics has resulted in a range of railway side buffer springs, draft gears and, in more demanding safety applications, crash buffers capable of absorbing large amounts of energy. The designs combine metal with Arnitel® thermoplastic polyether elastomer (TPEE). Acting as a spring, Arnitel TPEE absorbs and releases energy in predictable ways over a long service life, helping trains to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop smoothly. Unlike metal springs, Arnitel TPEE does not rust, deteriorate, fracture or lose its springiness. In contrast to rubber, Arnitel TPEE does not lose its ability to act as a spring over time -- the DSM material has a field life of at least 20 years versus 5-10 for rubber.

Sensor systems for jet engine testing – critical to development and qualification -- face tough conditions, ranging from extreme vibration to broad fluctuation in temperature. Connectors for the many harnesses in one manufacturer’s systems are made of Stanyl® polyamide 4,6 (PA46), taking advantage of the cost effectiveness, design freedom, heat resistance, dimensional stability, stiffness and durability of Stanyl grades.

“Art to Part” is to be the main focus of Distrupol’s exhibit at PDM 06 in Telford, 26th – 28th September. The term is used by Distrupol to describe the comprehensive support provided to customers with conceptual design, materials selection, tooling advice, testing, sampling and production optimisation. The exhibit should be of special interest to designers, moulders and OEM’s, who can find Distrupol, a founding partner of Plastics Design and Moulding (PDM), at stand No. G31 in Hall 2.

Making its debut in the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, new Dyneema® SK78 fiber from DSM Dyneema proved its superior performance under extreme conditions. The new grade of super-strong polyethylene was used in the running rigging of the two world-class yachts – ABN AMRO ONE and Pirates of the Caribbean – that finished first and second, respectively. Dyneema® SK78 fiber delivers improved stability under static loads for better performance and longer life in exceptionally demanding conditions such as the nine-month Volvo Ocean Race.

Three new series of granulators, featuring an innovative new ‘open-hearted’ engineering concept that facilitates drastically faster cleaning, maintenance and inspection, forms the centrepiece of the Rapid Granulators AB exhibit at Fakuma 2006 (Friedrichshafen, Germany, October 17-21). The new Rapid 300, 400 and 500 Series granulators have a new silver and black colour scheme, and between them provide cutter house widths between 300 and 1200 mm, and a throughput of up to 1500 kg/hour. The Rapid exhibit at Fakuma can be found in Hall B1, stand number 7107.
