Royal DSM N.V. today announces that it has decided to construct two new manufacturing facilities at its Chemelot site in Geleen, the Netherlands. DSM is making these investments in response to excellent market growth for two of the company’s top specialty products, Stanyl® polyamide 46 and Stamylan® UH ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, which is used among other things as a raw material for Dyneema® high strength fibers. The new Stanyl® plant and the new Stamylan® facility, which will each double existing production capacity, are scheduled to come on line in 2008. The total investment will be around EUR 100 million.

Making its debut in the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, new Dyneema® SK78 fiber from DSM Dyneema proved its superior performance under extreme conditions. The new grade of super-strong polyethylene was used in the running rigging of the two world-class yachts – ABN AMRO ONE and Pirates of the Caribbean – that finished first and second, respectively. Dyneema® SK78 fiber delivers improved stability under static loads for better performance and longer life in exceptionally demanding conditions such as the nine-month Volvo Ocean Race.

When leading UK producer of cleats for sailboats Clamcleats Ltd. was preparing to take the next step in product innovation, the company approached its long-term polymer supplier and technical service partner Distrupol for engineering support. Clamcleats’ objective was to develop a cleat accessory that would offer a new, higher level of control and safety in rope capture and release.
