WINNING MATERIALS FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE

With a strong focus on sustainability, the DSM product portfolio is able to deliver reduced environmental impact through lower fuel consumption and overall weight reduction; greater design freedom for system cost optimization; improved performance for better safety, greater comfort and longer life, and halogen free concepts for flame retardants automotive cables.

Michael Koch, Business Unit Director DSM Engineering Plastics Europe, says: “We have outstanding material knowledge combined with application expertise. In fact, there are ongoing discussions with the automotive industry to work with us towards sustainable solutions.”

STANYL® DIABLO OCD2100

New from DSM Engineering Plastics is Stanyl Diablo OCD2100, a high performance grade of Stanyl for under the bonnet (UTB) applications. This new grade is the first member of a next generation family of Stanyl grades that offer a revolutionary improvement in long term thermal stability. This technology, developed and patented by DSM, extends the functional life of components well beyond the limits of other high temperature polyamides. By limiting thermal oxidative breakdown, Stanyl Diablo withstands more than 3,000 hours temperature exposure up to 230°C with less than 15% loss in mechanical properties.

According to John van den Bungelaar, Product Manager Stanyl at DSM Engineering Plastics, continuous temperature levels up to 230°C are now increasingly common for UTB applications: “Stanyl Diablo OCD2100 outperforms current high heat resins on high temperature stability, but also on weldability, weld strength and the weld’s long term heat stability. Longer and better lifetime reliability of parts is also possible because of the material’s low creep and its fatigue behavior. Part design and function can be reached more easily and, more importantly, UTB part reliability can be guaranteed for the lifetime required.”

With Stanyl Diablo OCD2100, metal replacement options have been expanded tremendously. In addition to the cost reduction that can be achieved by replacing metals, the use of Stanyl Diablo OCD2100 also offers possible cost down options for applications running in specialty materials such as PPS, PPA and PEI.

Automotive applications

The use of engineering thermoplastics in automotive applications is helping to achieve a number of key benefits. These include greater design freedom, weight reductions, higher productivity, reduced environmental impact and improved comfort and safety.

DSM Engineering Plastics has a long proven track record in automotive applications. Now a further step in value creation is made by developing new or improved applications in plastics, such as:

Air and fuel systems

Key products include:

Stanyl Diablo for hot charged airducts. Stanyl Diablo outperforms current high heat resins on weldability, weld strength and the weld’s long term heat stability.

Arnite® PET XT for ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) housing / throttle valve bodies. Arnite PET XT is an ideal replacement material for metal and thermoplastics such as PPA, PPS, PEI.

Stanyl high performance polyamide for ETC/EGR gear, EGR housing/parts and turbo housing. Stanyl PA46 makes it possible to achieve weight reductions of over 50%, and system cost reductions as high as 50%.

  • Oil systems

    Key products include:

Akulon® PA6 for oil sumps. Akulon combines the functionalities of metal with weight reductions of up to 50%.

  • Powertrain

    Key products include:

Stanyl high performance polyamide for mechanical torsion dampeners (MTDs), oil pump driven gears and torque convertor reactors. The material helps production of superior components which guide the MTD springs and deliver better damping and overall performance. Stanyl makes it possible to achieve weight reductions of over 50%, and system cost reductions as high as 50%.

  • Lighting systems

    Key products include:

Arnite PET XL for bezels and AFL frames. The material offers significantly lower system costs as well as improved dimensional stability when compared to PPA, PPS, PEI and PBT.

  • Safety restraint systems

    Key products include:

Akulon Ultraflow PA6 for air bag containers. Akulon Ultraflow materials retain optimal mechanical integrity whilst meeting all necessary safety requirements. Yet, they make it possible to achieve cycle time reductions of up to 25%, leading to asignificant reduction in overall system costs.

Akulon PA6 for structural reinforcements. Akulon combines the functionalities of metal with weight reductions of up to 50%.

  • Interior applications

    Key products include:

Stanyl high performance polyamide for electroconductive LED bases,

Xantar® LDS or Stanyl LDS for MIDs

Akulon Ultraflow for AC lamellae. Akulon Ultraflow materials retain optimal mechanical integrity whilst meeting all necessary safety requirements. Yet, they make it possible to achieve cycle time reductions of up to 25%, leading to asignificant reduction in overall system costs.

  • Automotive E&E

    Key products include:

Halogenfree flame retardant Arnitel® C for automotive cable class D applications. Arnitel provides high heat solutions and meets environmental concerns. Importantly, it meets manufacturers’ key requirements (class D, ISO 6722 and LV112) at significantly lower costs.
