Ether de Iunx perfume uses The Glass Polymer™ resin from Eastman for innovative perfume packaging

CAPELLE A/D IJSSEL, THE NETHERLANDS - Ether de Iunx from 331 International is an exclusive new perfume with an innovative and highly inventive packaging using electronics: the computer mouse shaped bottle lights up when lifted. It was produced with The Glass Polymer™ resin, the only material to meet both the aesthetics and mechanical functions.

Cosmetics company 331 International, a cosmetics OEMs affiliate of the Shiseido group, has introduced an exclusive new perfume called Ether de Iunx. Currently only available from selected outlets in France and Belgium, Ether de Iunx is a very discreet brand. This is also reflected in its innovative and highly inventive packaging: the bottle has the shape and feel of a large computer mouse and appears to be black all over. However, when it is picked up, a light function inside the bottle lights up the bottle’s contents and branding. This effect is created through the use of LEDs, light cells and 2 CR2032 batteries, all hidden inside the bottle.

According to Annick.Masseglia, Director of 331 International : ”The concept was to move away from the standard perfume bottle, to create something entirely new. This application clearly demonstrates that total innovation can be achieved in the traditional cosmetics market, thanks to Eastman resins.

Ms. Masseglia explains: “For the production of the case, the company selected The Glass Polymer resin. This was the only material to meet the injection moulding requirements, coined with the required aesthetics and mechanical functions.”

For this application, 331 International required suppression of any injection gate vestiges. This proved to be possible with The Glass Polymer. Eastman technical services worked closely with MBF Plastiques, the processor appointed at the beginning of the project. MBF has excellent copolyester experience and managed all the required case injection moulding development in cooperation with Eastman.

Annick.Masseglia: “The Glass Polymer provides a deep colour, but is still sufficiently transparent for the light emission inside the case. This combines well with excellent touch, toughness, overall mouldability and chemical resistance.”

According to Vincent Gugumus who heads the Global Marketing Team for Cosmetics and Personal Care at Eastman, this application is possibly leading to further new developments in design: “The Iunx application is a precursor for what could be the future of cosmetic packaging, especially with the integration of electronics. I expect there will be opportunities for many other new functionalities besides lights.
