Ultem* Resin Helps Give BTicino Security Devices
BTicino Spa. chose Ultem* resin to help their office security devices keep excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal resistance.
BTicino was one of the first Italian manufacturers to produce electrical components designed with a modern edge. This attitude is reflected in the substantial innovations of their technology and production process automation. These focus attention towards providing solutions to contemporary household needs and uses. BTicino caters to residential (wiring devices and video and audio door entry systems), office (distribution and installation system of cables, power, data, and sound), and home automation (network technology, radio and cable) markets with the assistance of Ultem Resin.

GE Plastics & BTicino secure high standards together.
“On one hand, our conceptual drawings led us to experiment with new technologies and materials, such as Ultem resin. On the other, a variety of aesthetics came from the innovation of materials, processes, and functions. This characterizes BTicino. We approach technological evolution, materials, and aesthetics holistically. We anticipate the requirements of a changing society where needs are increasingly articulated and complex,” says Bticino Marketing Director, Fabrizio Fabrizi.
Bticino came to GE Plastics with the need for a materials solution for the enclosure of their RFID Transponder detector. This device controls the accessibility and security of buildings, which helps control the safety of those who use it. The application had to have extremely high temperature and impact resistance and be able to contend with the eventual hazards of burning or destruction. BTicino chose Ultem resin.
The high impact durability of GE Plastics’ Ultem resin helps deliver the robust performance standards required by BTicino’s RFID Transponder. This particular grade, Ultem ATX103R, is a polymer blend made of Ultem resin and PCE reinforced with 30% glass fiber. Ultem resin is an amorphous thermoplastic polyetherimide.
Ultem Resin offers outstanding high heat resistance, good mechanical and electrical resistance, high strength, modulus and broad chemical resistance - all at a competitive cost. Its balance of properties and processability offers design engineers exceptional flexibility and freedom to innovate.
Additionally, Ultem resins are inherently flame resistant with low smoke emission. In fact, they help customers meet stringent eco-label requirements such as TCO99, Blue Angel, White Swan and those of the EU. These resins also meet the fire safety criteria of UL. The use of GE Plastics’ Ultem allowed Bticino to comply with the safety regulations specific to these types of devices.
Ultem Resins offer:
• Inherent flame resistance
• Low smoke evolution
• Long-term heat resistance – RTI up to 180°C
• Dimensional stability
• Strength and modulus at elevated temperatures
• Hydrolytic and chemical stability
• Resistance to wave and vapor soldering
• FDA and NSF grades
Typical Ultem Resin applications include: electronic and electrical applications, aircraft and aerospace interiors, food service items, high temperature lighting bezels and reflectors, automotive applications, medical instrument trays, kitchenware, HVAC applications, as well as hardware and fasteners.
“At BTicino design isn’t just a decorative tool, it is the ability to create innovative solutions. This is why we chose to work with GE Plastics and Ultem Resin”, concluded Mr. Fabrizi.
