Syensqo launches industry-first portfolio of elastomers and lubricants fluids with certified circular content

Strengthening the supply chain and meeting customers’ growing demand for circular specialty polymers

Bollate, October 13, 2025 - Syensqo, a leading global provider of high-performance Specialty Polymers, has announced the global availability of several circular content certified high performance elastomers and lubricants fluids manufactured at its Spinetta Marengo plant in Piedmont, Italy. These certified products have allocated up to 29% of post-industrial recycled (PIR) Hydrofluoric acid (HF) through a mass balance system.

These high-performance specialty materials, derived from fluorspar, are renowned for their unique properties, such as resistance to heat and chemicals or long-lasting lubrication, and are used in highly specialized applications.

Fluorspar is listed as a critical mineral in both the US Energy Act and the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, which sets a target of sourcing at least 25% of annual consumption from domestic recycling by 2030. By replacing a long and globally spread supply chain from mining, refining to HF production by a single step, recovering the fluor from waste inside the Spinetta Marengo plant, it makes the supply chain more resilient to geopolitical, trade and ESG risks.

“Customers in elastomers and lubricant fluids are increasingly asking for circular solutions to meet their own ambitious circular sales targets. With this certification and our investment to ramp-up recycled Fluor production, we are proud to help them achieve these targets.” says Tom Wood, Senior Vice President and Head of Product & Asset Management for Syensqo’s Specialty Polymers. “This makes Syensqo the first manufacturer to offer a certified circular portfolio of these products and advance the transition to a circular economy in our market's value chains.”

Demand for Tecnoflon® FKM, FFKM elastomers and Fomblin M lubricants fluids produced at Spinetta is growing, particularly in the semiconductor, o-rings and seals for dry etch and deposition processes manufacturing and automotive engine, battery, transmission seals, gaskets and lubricants. Syensqo’s circular portfolio will enable our customers in these segments to accelerate their transition to a more circular economy without any compromise on performance.

FAQs

How is circular content implemented in high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids?

Circular content in high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids is implemented through a mass balance system that allocates post-industrial recycled hydrofluoric acid as feedstock. Syensqo applies this approach to certified circular Tecnoflon FKM, FFKM elastomers, and Fomblin M lubricant fluids, maintaining resistance to heat, chemicals, and long-lasting lubrication in demanding industrial applications.

Why is fluorspar supply critical for specialty polymer value chains?

Fluorspar supply is critical because fluorspar is the primary source of fluorine used in high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids. It is listed as a critical mineral under US and EU regulations due to supply risk. Recycling fluor internally supports stable production of fluorinated polymers such as Tecnoflon elastomers and Fomblin lubricant fluids.

What circular materials are suitable for semiconductor sealing and process applications?

Semiconductor sealing and process applications can use certified circular Tecnoflon FFKM elastomer produced with recycled fluor content. These materials are used in o-rings and seals for dry etch and deposition processes. Circular integration supports sustainability objectives while maintaining chemical resistance and durability required for semiconductor manufacturing environments.

Which circular polymer solutions are appropriate for automotive sealing and lubrication systems?

Automotive sealing and lubrication systems can incorporate certified circular Tecnoflon elastomers and Fomblin M lubricant fluids. These materials are used in engine, battery, and transmission seals, gaskets, and lubricants. Circular fluor integration supports sustainability targets while preserving long-term lubrication performance and resistance to heat and chemicals.

What circular polymer solutions help reduce supply-chain risk for specialty chemicals?

Circular polymer solutions that recover fluor internally help reduce supply-chain risk for specialty chemicals. Syensqo produces certified circular Tecnoflon elastomers and Fomblin M lubricant fluids by recovering fluor from waste at the Spinetta Marengo site, reducing dependence on globally distributed fluorspar supply chains and improving resilience to geopolitical and trade risks.

What makes Syensqo’s circular elastomer and lubricant fluid portfolio unique?

Syensqo’s circular elastomer and lubricant fluid portfolio is unique because it is the first certified offering to allocate recycled fluor through a mass balance system. The portfolio combines verified circular content with established material performance, supporting circular economy adoption across specialty polymer value chains without compromising the properties required for demanding industrial applications.

Which Syensqo products are included in the certified circular elastomer portfolio?

Syensqo’s certified circular elastomer portfolio includes Tecnoflon FKM and FFKM elastomers manufactured at the Spinetta Marengo plant in Italy. These products incorporate allocated post-industrial recycled fluor content while maintaining resistance to heat and chemicals. The materials are used in demanding applications such as seals and gaskets.

What role does Fomblin M play in Syensqo’s circular lubricant fluid portfolio?

Fomblin M lubricant fluids are part of Syensqo’s certified circular portfolio produced at the Spinetta Marengo site. These lubricants incorporate allocated recycled fluor through a mass balance system while maintaining long-lasting lubrication performance. The products are used in demanding applications including automotive systems and specialized industrial environments.
