DSM Engineering Plastics has added two members to their Stanyl Team in Europe, as part of the company’s mission to grow the team’s resources in product management, customer service and technical support in Europe and worldwide. The new team members are Anne Bergsma, General Product Manager, Stanyl Europe and Paul Habets, Application Development Manager, Stanyl Europe. Stanyl polyamide (PA) is produced and marketed exclusively by DSM and is available worldwide.

DSM’S ARNITEL® TAKES A POUNDING ON RAILROADS AND LASTS LONGER

With a predicted life of 20 years when used as railway pads, Arnitel® thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) from DSM Engineering Plastics offer better load-bearing capacity than rubber, better abrasion resistance, and the fabrication advantages of injection-moulded or extruded thermoplastics over thermoset rubber moulding. With a predicted life of 20 years when used as railway pads between rails and concrete ties, Arnitel thermoplastic copolyester elastomers (TPEs) from DSM Engineering Plastics offer better load-bearing capacity than rubber, better abrasion resistance, and the fabrication advantages of injection-moulded or extruded thermoplastics over thermoset rubber moulding. With consistent performance from -55 °C to 150 °C and the longest lifetime to failure vs. other TPEs—important owing to the expense and time required for replacing pads—Arnitel®-TPE pads are especially effective at extending the length of continuous use performance and reducing system costs.

Side airbag covers in 2003 Phantom: Rolls-Royce adopts DSM Arnitel® TPE-E from DSM Engineering Plastics. Side door airbag covers for the 2003 Phantom from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. now employ DSM Engineering Plastics’ Arnitel® TPE copolyester elastomer. The Arnitel® TPE grade used for the cover was designed to perform well in automotive airbag and other demanding applications. With the successful Rolls-Royce Phantom application, DSM has extended the application range for its Arnitel® TPE into the automotive airbag market segment.

DSM announces significant Akulon® expansion for new flexible packaging application

DSM Engineering Plastics has announced an expansion of its Akulon PA6 capacity at its polyamide plant in Emmen, the Netherlands. The capacity expansion - by over one third - follows a complete upgrade and capacity increase that took place less than 5 years ago. The new production capacity will be dedicated to the production of high viscous polyamide 6, which is used in flexible packaging, stockshapes and mono-filament production.

Arnite® dominates in this application, replacing alternative thermoset resins through its exceptional dimensional stability, high strength, and performance at under-bonnet temperatures of up to 130C. Arnite® has also proven to maintain it’s high performance profile for more than 1 million cycles, an important reliability requirement. DSM Engineering Plastics has now set its sights on the US and Asian markets, where designers, like their European counterparts, are moving away from thermoset alternatives in search of higher performance, more cost effective alternatives.
