PHILIPS LONG-LIFE PAR38 LAMP BENEFITS FROM HOUSING OF ARNITE® PBT FROM DSM ENGINEERING PLASTICS

The housing and rim of this Philips 25 watt MasterColor® Integrated PAR38 metal halide lamp stay strong and good looking, thanks to Arnite® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) from DSM Engineering Plastics. The housing and rim of the recently-introduced Philips 25 watt MasterColor® Integrated PAR38 metal halide lamp retain their good looks and strength, thanks to Arnite® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) from DSM Engineering Plastics. The Philips lamp has proven popular in retail and industrial settings because it lasts two to three times longer than similarly-rated halogen lamps, and it uses 65% less energy to create more light output than halogen competitors. In addition to the material, DSM Engineering Plastics provided product and tool design consultation for the lamp, as well as International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) end-product testing.

DSM to double capacity for engineering plastics in China

DSM Engineering MaterialsRoyal DSM N.V. today announces the opening of its new compounding site for engineering plastics at Jiangyin in the Jiangsu province of China on April 26, 2006. This project will double the total capacity for the product lines Stanyl® PA46, Akulon® PA6 and Arnite® PBT. These materials are used in manufacturing key molded components for the automotive, electrical and electronics, consumer and industrial segments.

FROM DELICATE TO TOUGH, ULTRA-PRECISE STANYL® PA46 GEARS HELP KEEP JOYSTEER® POINTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Inside this joystick housing for Joysteer®, an aid that will allow those with muscular disabilities to steer an automobile by joystick, a gear made of Stanyl® polyamide 4,6 (PA46) allows accurate encoding of how much the driver turns the joystick handle (which, while not shown here, will mount inside the silver cylindrical assembly in the center). This is then transmitted to extra-strong gears made of Stanyl® that turn the car’s steering shaft - and thus the car itself. Gears made of Stanyl® in Joysteer® depend on the high strength, low friction, and dimensional stability of the material to help ensure safe driving.Precision gears made of Stanyl®, a high-performance polyamide 46 (PA46) resin from DSM Engineering Plastics, help a new joystick-based drive-by-wire system translate a driver’s steering movements into vehicle control. Called Joysteer®, the new system was designed to enable drivers with arm muscle disabilities get behind the wheel – or in this case, joystick – and drive by themselves. Joysteer will be demonstrated at Hannover Messe 2006, 24-28 April, a leading showplace for mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and the automotive sector.

ARNITEL® EL250, SOFTEST COPE/TPE-E, GAINS GROUND IN OVERMOULDING APPLICATIONS FROM SOFT GRIPS TO HIGH-TOUCH CAR INTERIORS

Arnitel® EL250 is well suited for soft touch components in consumer electronics, mobile telephones, domestic appliances, kitchen tools, pencil grips, personal care, automotive interior applications and the like.Arnitel® EL250 thermoplastic polyether elastomer (TPE-E or copolyester ether elastomer, COPE), at 25 Shore D the softest available thermoplastic elastomer, has revealed itself as an important new material for applications requiring soft touch, pleasant hand feel or non-slip overmoulding. Arnitel EL250 uniquely combines both COPE performance with a softness that matches ultra-soft, but performance-challenged materials

WABASH TRANSMISSION SENSOR RELIES ON STANYL® FOR HIGH HEAT RESISTANCE

Wabash transmission sensor relies on Stanyl® for high heat resistance. EVANSVILLE, Ind. (April 10, 2006) Wabash Technologies selected Stanyl® for the transmission sensor used on heavy-duty full size and commercial trucks. Stanyl TW200F8 (40% glass reinforced polyamide 46) is used for the main body of the sensor and Stanyl TW271F6 (30% glass reinforced polyamide 46) is used for the rotor.

SIEMENS VDO PIONEERS AUTOMOTIVE USE OF STANYL® PA46 FROM DSM FOR E-MOTOR END-LAMINATE IN NEW ABS PUMP

End laminates made of DSM Engineering Plastics Stanyl® polyamide 4,6 (PA46) are 0.4-0,6 mm thin, yet strong enough to serve in a newly-designed Siemens VDO anti-blocking system (ABS) pump motor for automobiles. The Stanyl PA46 laminate ends retain working rigidity and dimensional stability up to 290 °C, higher than most thermoplastics.Stanyl® polyamide 46 (PA46), often used in non-automotive e-motor end-laminates thanks to its thin-wall strength and heat resistance, finds its first in-car use in an anti-blocking system (ABS) pump motor by Siemens VDO. In the compact, newly designed e-motor, Stanyl resin enables a 0.4-0.6 mm, ultra-thin-wall design that maximizes both the laminate size and the number of wire windings. It provides a cost-effective way to optimize the motor assembly process while insulating the wire windings electrically from the metal rotor armature. The Stanyl end-laminate retains working rigidity and dimensional stability up to 290 °C, higher than most thermoplastics subjected to wire winding tension load.

DSM ENGINEERING PLASTICS INCREASES AKULON PRICES

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (February 2, 2006) In an effort to offset the escalating cost of raw materials, energy and transportation, DSM Engineering Plastics will increase prices for Akulon® polyamide 6 extrusion grades by $0.06 lb. in the US, Canada and Mexico. This increase will take effect as of January 15, 2006.

DSM material innovation improves bobsleigh stability

Bobsleigher Ilse Broeders: “‘Smart blocks’ a good step on the road to success in Turin”
The bobsleighs to be used by the Dutch Olympic Team at the Olympic Games in Turin contain special DSM vibration dampers that make the bobsleigh more stable. This reduces the risk of steering errors and means that better times can be achieved. The vibration dampers reduce the number of vibrations in the bobsleigh runners to 40% compared with the dampers traditionally used for bobsleighs.

BOPLA’S BOCARD ENCLOSURE COVER OFFERS CLARITY AND STRENGTH THANKS TO DSM XANTAR® PC

Clear cover available on BOPLA’s Bocard enclosures is made of Xantar® polycarbonate resin from DSM Engineering Plastics. The Bocard cover benefits from the processing economies, clarity, impact resistance and dimensional stability of Xantar.BOPLA Gehäuse Systeme GmbH (Bünde, Germany) has chosen Xantar® polycarbonate from DSM Engineering Plastics for the available clear covers of its family of Bocard plastic electronics enclosures. The clear panels of the covers are made of Xantar 22 R 01001 resin. The covers meet IEC 529 IP65 specifications, sealing out dust and minimizing ingress of low-pressure water, thanks in part to the resin’s excellent dimensional stability. In addition, the long-term clarity of Xantar allows visual monitoring of equipment housed in the Bocard enclosure, while the resin’s impact resistance helps prevent breakage and incursion by objects. Xantar meets UL-94 V2 @ 1,5 mm ratings, and the 22 R 01001 grade provides good flow and excellent mould release for ease of production.
