URMOND (NL), 9 October 2007 - DSM Dyneema, inventor and maker of ultra-strong, lightweight Dyneema® polyethylene fiber, and TenCate Advanced Armour, manufacturer of insert plates, have combined their expertise to develop best-in-class fiber-only (monolithic) inserts to be used in hard ballistic body armor. These inserts, which feature proprietary technology from TenCate and Dyneema® HB50 UniDirectional (UD) technology from DSM Dyneema, result in the lower weight of the total body armor, which allows the possibility of adding additional protection to other body areas.

DSM DYNEEMA AWARDED CONTRACT TO PROVIDE HIGH END ARMOR PROTECTION FOR US MILITARY COMBAT VEHICLES

Urmond (NL), October 5, 2007 - DSM Dyneema today announced that Composix Co., a leading US manufacturer of vehicle armor, has selected its product Dyneema® HB26 to fulfill an order from a major US Department of Defense contractor for a high-end armor system. Dyneema® HB26 unidirectional (UD) bullet-resistant composite offers a unique combination of light weight for enhanced vehicle mobility, maneuverability, and excellent ballistic performance versus new, and emerging unconventional threats such as IEDs and EFPs. Composix will produce hard ballistic armor panels with Dyneema® for about 1000 vehicles.

Ultra-strong, lightweight Dyneema® polyethylene fiber used in a swinging tether experiment in spaceURMOND (NL), 28 September 2007 - DSM Dyneema today announced its ultra-strong, lightweight Dyneema® polyethylene fiber was chosen by Delta-Utec, one of the world's leading experts in the field, to be used in a swinging tether experiment in space. The experiment entailed the attempted return of a capsule from space without the need for rocket propulsion. The “Space Mail” delivery of the second Young Engineers’ Satellite (YES2) capsule – which was lofted into space on Sept. 14 – made use of the unique qualities and performance of Dyneema® fiber. The total tether had a length of 30 km, with a weight of only 5.5 kg. Also, only a 0.5 mm thickness was required, due to the exceptional strength of Dyneema®.

HONG KONG POLICE SELECTS BODY ARMOR MADE WITH DYNEEMA® UD FOR PROTECTION AGAINST STEEL CORE AMMUNITION

The bullet-resistant vests are the first soft ballistics to meet the required level of protection of the Hong Kong police force; conventional vests utilize hard-pressed panels or metal. Dyneema® SB21 UD offers a unique combination of stopping power, light weight and flexibility to this body armor, which incorporates ballistic packs manufactured by Chongqing Jinguan New Technology Co. under the close supervision of Techcom Security Technology Limited of Hong Kong. Intellectual property protection has been obtained to guard this unique body armor.

DYNEEMA PURITY® FIBER FOR ORTHOPEDIC SUTURES SURPASSES POLYESTER IN PROMOTING HEALING

URMOND (NL), 13 September, 2007 – DSM Dyneema today announced that Dyneema Purity®, its high-performance specialty polyethylene fiber developed specifically for medical applications, has been shown to promote better tissue formation than traditional polyester in orthopedic suture applications. In independent testing by NAMSA’s Biomatech Lab, braids made of Dyneema Purity® exhibited enhanced fibro-connective tissue formation as well as reduced irritation and lower inflammation compared to polyester. Coupled with the exceptional mechanical performance of Dyneema Purity®, the world’s strongest fiber, these results make this ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) an excellent alternative to polyester.

The exceptional strength-to-weight ratio of Dyneema® HPPE has enabled the company to replace multiple polyester slings with fewer, lighter weight slings from sling maker Technotex (member of the Unitex Group), simplifying part handling and reducing storage. Also, as compared to polyester, the new slings with Dyneema® provide reduced stretch that enables crane operators to precisely position very large and heavy parts on a machine tool.
