HELMETS FEATURING DYNEEMA® HB26 ARE CHOSEN BY SOUTH KOREAN ARMY AS LIGHTEST-WEIGHT SOLUTION FOR FRAGMENT PROTECTION
URMOND (NL), 20 October 2008 - To obtain the optimum combination of fragment-stopping performance and light weight, the Republic of Korea has selected protective helmets featuring Dyneema® HB26 material for its army. The 24,000 helmets, manufactured by Samyang Comtech in Seoul, offer up to 20 percent weight savings compared to conventional aramid helmets, together with a higher ballistics performance when using the v50 test. This significant program is a volume milestone for Dyneema® HB26 in a helmet application, and demonstrates the acceptance of the material based on its excellent fitness for use in helmets. To support growing demand for its ballistics protection materials, as evidenced by the South Korean Army’s large order, DSM Dyneema is on plan to significantly boost capacity for Dyneema® UD (unidirectional) composites used in life protection. Additional capacity in both yarn and UD (unidirectional) material has been brought on stream at its Greenville, North Carolina, facility. DSM Dyneema is on target to double global capacity for UD in 2009, as part of a USD $450 million investment announced earlier.
URMOND (NL), 14 October 2008 - DSM Dyneema today announced that Protech Armored Products, a BAE Systems Products Group company, is marketing protective helmets made with ultra-strong Dyneema® HB26 unidirectional (UD) composite in the United States. The Denver Police Department in Colorado is the first U.S. organization to adopt the new Protech Delta LT helmets. This model meets National Institute of Justice (NIJ) IIIA specifications and is 15 percent lighter in weight than comparable 100 percent aramid helmets. The Denver Police Department's selection of Protech helmets reflects the growing demand for Dyneema® UD in life protection materials. Additional capacity in both yarn and UD (unidirectional) material used in personal and vehicle protection has been brought on stream at its Greenville, North Carolina, facility. This follows DSM’s recent announcement of a 450 million USD investment in its Dyneema® business. This new technology platform is currently under evaluation for key vehicle protection programs before becoming commercially available. Products derived from it will allow armor designers and decision makers to balance the requirements for better performing vehicles, increased payloads, and room for future weight growth. In addition, they will address the need for better protection against the most dangerous and emerging threats today.
